Mk5 2000 2.5tdi Lucas Epic Pump Sensor Cleaning??

Hi Folks,

Can anyone assist me with the following codes:

Code 1189=Pump speed lost
Code 1644=Pump speed sensor

The light came on for the first time a few months ago. To the best of my knowledge it wasn't from anyone disconnecting the pump cables whilst it was running. It was reasonably wet weather though if I recall.

I know I have the option of switching to the Bosche Manual pump with an accelerator cable. I am wondering if there is an easier and cheaper way as I have just been quoted AUD $1600 (approx 1000 pounds!!). The mechanic also said the cables on the back of the pump were in good condition which surprised him.

I saw a post from the legendry Andyg about sensor cleaning being easy and am hoping he or someone else may be able to post a walkthough of how to go about it.

There was also these two other incidental codes. All four came up after clearing..
1402 & 0401

If I cross-reference the faults with the fault code table, it appears that the problem is with the pump speed sensor itself (Codes 1644,1189, 1402 and 0401).

Can anyone tell me how the sensor works? Is it possible to recondition the sensor? Or it is able to be replaced without replacing the whole pump?

you can replace it and it is pump off job. allso the rubber seal are prone for leaking. good look in finding one. ps. clean and spray with white paint b4 you remove it as it has to go back in exsact same place.

I'd check the connectors first, followed by the wiring with a test meter for continuity and possible resistance

The car was professionally cleaned a while back but I can't remember if they steamed the engine. It's quite possible!

I'll check the connections and resistance too. Does anyone know how much I should expect to pay for a Bosch pump and where does the throttle conversion kits come from?

Also what type of Bosch Pump would I use on a 2000 2.5L tdi?
