Good replies , thanks.
I realise rustolium is a much easier way to paint a van but being me I would still want to pay a pro to do it right whether it was rustolium or spray painted.I may be good at what I do but I'm not good at what other people do.Every man to his own trade.

You have got to realise that your MK5 is rusting from the inside out. It might be half decent nick I don't know, but the chassis is laminated with a strip of steel that runs along its length underneath and several other veneers in places like the spring hangers etc. to give it strength. Water collects between the pot welds of the hidden laminated steel and it rusts simple.

Its not going to be a showroom van until you strip it completely, drill out all the spots and reassemble it. You can't go far wrong with an oilwash through the chassis on a bit of wasteland and painting it yourself. No 'Professional' will be able to reach the parts that really need the most attention. Spray it panel by panel, you'll be alright!

As for a newer van, Transits are getting lighter and more laminated if anything so I'd defo stick with the Mk5!
My Mk5 was biodegradable and disintegrated with time.

Having bought a MK7 Luton, which is great, the costs etc have convinced me to keep my MK5 for as long as possible instead of upgrading it to a MK6.
The MK 5 may be slow and noisy but the peace of mind more than makes up for it.. MOT due in May so fingers crossed.
