Do auto gearbox's have thermostats ?

Postby shortcut » Fri Mar 12, 2010 3:07 pm

Hi folks , just a quick question for those who know what they are talking about !

One of the jobs I have left to do is to fit a bigger cooler to my van so that i don't kill the autobox, I did look into it last year but time and money were conspiring against me, this year is looking more hopefull.

I've read the threads and looked at the pictures posted on this site and have one question left to answer.

Is it possible to fit a cooler that is to big ? I can imagine that in the middle for what passes as a summer it wouldn't be to much of an issue, but what about in the middle of winter ?

This got me wondering if a huge cooler would never let the oil get to working temp on winters morning or is the oil controlled by a thermostat like the engine cooling system ?

you can get stats for oil cooler systems, but wouldn't know what the ideal temp was?... considering many autobox cooling systems are the cars water sytem I'd imagine they get quite hot!

I'd imagine heat was the killer?

No, they don't :D
How big :?: :o
If it's running in conjunction with the one fitted in the radiator, I wouldn't give it any thought

Here's my effort  viewtopic.php?f=13&t=48019&start=0 :D

Hi andyg, Have read your posts so many times i'm sure i could write it out complete with diagrams !

I figure the cooler i'm goiong to fit will be around the same size as yours, and in line with the existing cooler in the radiator.

It was just a thought that ran through the brain cell the other day !
I wouldn't want to fit somethimg that was an advantage in the summer but caused problems in the colder weather !
The van didn't stuggle at all last year even carrying some really heavy loads up big inclines on the hottest days but my radiator is new and so is probably as efficent at cooling as is possible with the standard setup.
My mrs is talking about buying a small caravan in the summer and as her car wouldn't pull the skin of a rice pudding it will be down to the van to drag it around and i don't want to overload the transmission.

In the coldest few months...i.e. NOW :x

I just wrapped the second cooler in Tin Foil to stop the airflow

Thankyou for the help folks. did a quick delivery this morning of about 120 miles at a constant 75 -80 miles an hour and the whole time thinking of how much this cooler would help !
