Mk5 2.5 non turbo running on 3 cylinders?

Hi there everyone,
can anyone help with a problem with my 2000 80 swb 2.5 non turbo, driving home yesterday all was well, untill i pulled out from a turning and she started running on just three cylinders with obviously loss of power, I also noticed some black smoke in the mirror.
seems strange as was running fine untill whatever let go, the vans been well looked after with 113k on the clock and full fire service history.
any ideas on what to check first?

This has happened to me a few times, i also have a 2000 80 SWB non turbo, try the leak off mod first if that does not cure it then turn your attention to the torque sleeve inside the top of the injection pump, do a search for the threads on here which explain it in more detail

More than likely air in one of the injectors (most likely the No1/front one). With motor running loosen the 17m A/F union nut that joins the feed pipe to the injector enough so fuel comes out, if neat fuel nip it back tight, if frothy let it run til neat comes out. You soon see which one it is, and that cylinder will chime in happy as you like when you've got the air out.

There will be an air leak in the fuel line between tank and pump - ask me how I know this one Mine would do it as you shut off after a long fast run - usually at motorway junction roundabouts . It was the inlet union to the fuel filter (from lift pump) on mine.

The leak off mod will go some way to help with this, but can't cope with a large bubble when it come through.

It's also possible that you've got an injector gone down, but you'll soon find out as bleeding doesn't cure it.

Jim, thanks for the reply, I'll give all you suggested a try tomorrow, done the leak off mod already which didn't seem to make any difference.
I'll let you know if i do find air in the system, hopefully that is the case.

my money on an injector.....crack injectors open to whilst running one at time to indicate the faulty one.hth.

this happens to my van every so often oil in air filter and it revs the b xs off the engine sometimes i have to stall the engine
have you looked for a loose bolt in the rocker cover it is on a thread in here somewhere look for thread in mk 5 oil in filter or something like that found it viewtopic.php?f=4&t=45995&hilit=rocker+cover
