seat change?

Hi folks

been away from this forum for too long......... all work and no play as they say

ive been using the van (mk4) on a more or less permanent basis lately and its shown to me that the drivers seat base foam has almost completely collapsed on the door side from being used so much over the years, ending up giving me a real pain in the rear and back after a few hours driving..........

i know this has probably been asked many times before, but could someone give me a heads up on likely candidates for a simple to fit ( ie least amount of work involved) relacement from either a different year transit or even a different vehicle..... either just the seat base or a complete seat.

Have a look on ebay, there's loads of Transit seats out there, you probably won't need to change the base just the seat itself, mk5 ones should fit and there are a lot more of them about

I got old driverseat from a citybus, it was easy to fit in, here´s some pics.

I have a fiesta/escort si wingback drivers seat in mine. Its sooooo much more comfortable than the standard transit seat. You do need 2 pieces of 6mm steel strip to fit it though (or box section or something like that!)

Matt how did you get the double passenger seat to match, did you have it specially trimmed?

It was that fabric (along with the drivers seat and all the other seats in the back) when I got it.

how did you attach the box section to the lower frame?

I cant remember exactly... but basically I drilled the holes in the box section in the right place then cut a section out of the top of the box... I was then able to bolt the box section to the seat frame and the seat then bolts to the box section.

The problem with using box is that the seat feels very high - I would advice using 6mm strip to fix the seat

Great minds eh! Well its a simple if not a bit heavy solution until I can weld a frame up to the right height and offset.
Box section must be the easiest and most common solution.

I used 75mm or 60mm box section flat as the spacings between the cobra seat bolts was quite a bit less than the transit bolts - two 60mm sections allow you to drill and match both the sets of holes which are at a different offset via one piece of steel.

For the left hand seat base I dismantled a RH base and reassembled it, ahaving filed off a few bits. It still won't work decently but it is adjustable so long as you tighten up the bolts when you've got the position right. Took off the seatbelt and used a middle passenger belt stalk bolted to the floor - bit of a tight fit with a bit of drill widening of the seat base there.

its a rear seat out of a renault espace ........ bit on the narrow side, but for ten quid from a scrappy beggars cant be choosers......

it will do for the short term at least......

just need to get some strips of 6mm plate to do the job properly.......

Them seats look comfy!

Reason I used cobra seats as in a chassis cab is because my partially knackered left knee was excruciatingly locking up after 50 miles or so. With these seats I can get the right leg angle and more room. Must have lost a good couple of inches in my spine though so I would recommend it....but hey, at least my knees OK!
