crunching gears

hi just remembered another thing that has been bothering me with my 2.5 swb 100 r reg transit. occasionally when im goin up through the gears it crunches and quite alot going down, which does my nut!!! could it be lack of oil in gear box? any other suggestions would be very helpful!!!

You could try checking and topping up the oil and see if that cures it, otherwise it looks like a replacement box i'm afraid

does anyone have a diagram of 1998 2.5 transit gear box ( to drain and refill) ??????? urgently please and thankyou

Have you eliminated the possibility of a seized spindle nose bearing and/or dragging clutch? Typically, it will be difficult to engage first gear or reverse gear when stationary due to the input shaft still rotating when the clutch pedal is depressed.
