Am i missing something??

Postby Alfie Tyler » Sun Apr 04, 2010 10:16 pm

I have been reading threads casually over the past few months picking up tit bits of useful info.

I can't help noticing the amount of posts complaining about poor starting and poor performance.

I'm driving a very reliable SWB mid top 1999 Mk5 with the 2.5 Banana pushing it forward.

My old girl starts first time on the turn. She run's sweet as a nut and she will quite happily cruise at 65 - 70mph on the motorway even with a slight incline. She tips the scale at 2.3 - 2.7 tonnes most of the time as i carry alot of equipment and a passenger.

I have done the EGR and Leak off mods, But i put the overall wellbeing of my old girl down to the fact that she gets treated with new Oil and three kit every 5k or so, A bottle of injector cleaner every 500miles or so. And she's never thrashed.

I'm not sure on the diff though, if someone could kindly check S705 XNC

What was the performance of these vans out of the factory? Thoughts anyone?

You've got a good one and it sounds like you look after it. Hang on to it  Though I think your injector cleaner habit must get a bit expensive every 500 miles.

There are one hell of a lot of dogs out there

They are infamous for being poor starters, especially in winter, but usually because they haven't been maintained particularly well.

With fresh thin oil, a healthy battery and well adjusted valves, there isn't usually a problem. Though these engines do need to be spun over pretty fast to come to life, and I don't think a lack of glowplugs helps the situation. Though I am always grateful for the simplicity!

Diamond White???

As far as i know she's been standard Tranny blue all her life!! Must check log book make sure all is correct.......

Injector cleaner is cheap enough if you know where to get it, doesn't have to be anything special as it's going in so often.

She has got the scabby arches / doors coming on though, can't wait for a decent summers day to get the Mig out again!!
