Propshaft bolt reference

Postby simplyshaker » Wed Mar 31, 2010 5:38 pm

Hi all,

If anyone has been following my posts about my noise problem, then you will know that after taking off the propshaft I could find no obvious fault. Now I want to put the thing back on and I'm having problems getting hold of the bolts I need.

Went to Fords, but thet couldn't find the reference for the bolts holding the prop onto the diff flange.

Managed to get the front 4 bolts needed, and they gave be some others they had in stock to try. The bolts they gave me are the same threading (of course) but the head is a 17mm hexagonal head only, it doesn't have the torx fitting. I managed to take the original bolts off using a socket, a 16mm one, but the extra milimeter is no letting the socket fit on properly, there just isn't the room against the UJ for the socket to hold the head to tighten fully.

I've took a photo of the two bolts, they have both torx/hex heads but its the closer thread patterned one I need. (the bottom one)

Has anyone got the FORD reference for this bolt ? Has anyone access to the info ? Or any ideas at all where I can get hold of them ?

Thanks

Has no one had to get bolts for a propshaft before ? Any Ebay shop or online shop got any ? If any one knows of anywhere in England I can find them, i could at least get a friend to send them over to me !

If anyone knows anything, any help would be great, I can't use the van until this is sorted :(

Metric fine pitch HEX, prolly HT (high tensile)... the bottom one is the correct one, as I believe most prop driven fords were... can't you get it with a spanner??? seem to remember that's I how removed 'em before.

Well the bottom one IS the correct one ! The problem is I can't get hold of 4 new ones to put the prop back on. Ford had some other hex high tensile bolts but the head is too big (17mm instead of 16mm like the old ones), so I can tighten them up properly with a socket and torque wrench. I want to set it up to the right torque so the spanner idea is out for me.

Ideally, I would like the torx/hex setup like the original bolts, but it there are some other bolts with at least a longer head ( Ford have given me with a thinner head ) they would be fine.

Went back to Ford today, they say they can't help me. They even told me to go see a shop that sells nuts and bolts to see if they have any.

This is ridiculous, obviously Ford can't be arsed to find this bolt for me, its too much work for them to go the the computer screens and find it !
Is there anyone who can help me get this van back on the road !!

I'm going to have to try another Fords in the hope that they can be a bit more helpful, but this is bloody stupid, four bolts that are standard items that are supposedly changed each time you have to take the propshaft off and they can't find the reference !!!

I believe its ford part no 6152077 or E801208 S200 and is the same as a mk 4 or mk5 van

Thanks MinorMatt !!

I'll try and go back to Ford and see if they can get hold of them, but I still think I'll goto another Ford because the last one took me for an idiot !

Don't worry too much about using a spanner (unless it's really high torque!) I've seen a couple of twisted prop shafts but never any sheard bolts, if you can use the spanner, just use a little thread lock to stop them coming loose (though I'm sure the fine pitch is to combat it, one of the reasons anyway..)

I was thinking about using thread lock and just doing them up with a spanner but I still haven't found where the noise is coming from so I wanted to be able to get them off easier, secondly, I have a big tendance to overtighten bolts when using spanners.

I just tapped that first number on a search engine, and it seems that they are the same bolts used on Mk1 Escort propshafts.

I was thinking about getting some spring washers about a couple of mm thick, I bet that will give me the place on the bolt head to get the socket on. That way I can use the van until I can get down to the big town to FORDs.

Thanks for the help, and a special thanks to MinorMatt for spending the time to look on microcat !

Thats the problem, with the 17mm ones I can't get the socket on. Thanks for the link, I saw that before and thats whats given me the idea for the spring washers

Put the propshaft back on this weekend, using the new bolts. The bolts for the gearbox end were the same as the original (top bolt on photo), the diff bolts where of a different kind as stated above, and the socket couldn't sit fully on the bolt to tighten it up to the right torque. Anyway, not been back to FORD, mainly because they where very unhelpful anyway !

Bought some spring washers, they are about 2mm thick. This has raised the bolt head slightly helping the socket sit better (not fully though). Anyway, put it back on, got them torqued up and jobs a good un !

It doesn't seem that anyone else had had this problem, either its easier to get the original bolts in England, or people just tighten them up with a spanner, I don't know. This is just my method of getting around this problem if it helps anyone in the future all the better.

Another thing, since putting the propshaft back on, after doing no changes to it at all, the noise that I had seems to have stopped !
