Misfire

Postby the busman » Tue May 04, 2010 11:08 pm

Had a crappy day today... Starter motor died but managed to get a bump start to get me home.. Then on the M4 the fuel filter fell off, so reattached and got the RAC to tow start .. Drove another 20 miles, 10 miles from home then the bloody thing decided to loose power and have a real bad misfire...

Booked in for a new starter motor tomorrow, but any ideas regarding the misfire?? Could it be an airlock since the fuel filter falling off??

Help.. Oh and its a 2.5 diesel banana on an S plate...

Probably just needs bleeding, might need a new filter as well. Any smoke? What colour?

No smoke that I could see.... The bit that am confused about is that it drove fine for 20 miles... Any mods to prevent the filter falling off again.. I have drive 70k in the last 2 years.. In the last 3 months the filter has fallen off twice... :x

The RAC man didnt seem to think it was that unusal... :(

If it's the one with the plastic locking ring then it's not being fitted correctly or it's broken.

Fill the filter with diesel and push into place, rotate it until it locks into place (this is the bit that most people miss as it has 3 locating lugs), now install the plastic locking ring and tighten up by hand, you will feel it go tight and then lock into place (a bit like a bayonet fitting).

Well, fitted a new starter. Got the old bird to fire up and bled the injectors whils it was running.. Air was found in number 3.. All good now.... Thanks for the advice. :D

Odd that it ran for 20 miles before getting the misfire tho'.
