Injection pump advance unit ?

I've been told that there is an advance unit within the injection pump on a 2.5di engine, a sort of 'snail cam within a cam 'type set up. Is there anyway of checking whether this is functioning correctly ?

Trying to arm myself with all the info to hit the engine and sort its problems over the next couple if days .

The external cam was only on the old lucas pumps, the bosch pumps used an internal hydraulic set up.

I'm told the engine is 89 on -2.5di though when I was looking at one the other day the inlet tract looked different ? Mine is short with a central mounted tb whereas the other one had a bunch of bananas tract.

I spotted a 92 on casting code on the exhaust whilst grubbing about.

I was told it's an internal set up and may become clogged if the fuel filter isn't changed regularly?
