Couldn't find any mention of this on here, so for information:
Just changed the timing belt (because the water pump had gone & it looked like the belt had suffered).
On getting a kit from the motor factors, I found out that the tensioner in the kit was nothing like the one on the van - the guys in the shop couldnt explain why - their parts book definitely showed that the one they had was for my van (97 diesel).
Hunting around the internet, it turns out that since 2001 Ford recommend changing the tensioner - see http://www.catautomotive.co.uk/technical.shtml for pictures of the "old" & "new" types of tensioner - the Haynes manual doesnt mention this - if you've got the TIS it does (but you've got to look to find it) & describes how to tension the belt with the new tensioner.

Yes, the old manual static type tensioner is no longer supplied as a service part, a new automatic tensioner replaced it.
It's real easy to do, just install the belt leaving the 4 bolts on the pump pulley loose, wind the tensioner round so the markings line up and then tighten everything up.
turn the engine 1 and 7/8 turns and recheck the markings, if ok your done...if it's tight re do the whole lot again.

it's contantly applying the correct tension to the belt, where as the old one could only apply the correct tension during initial setting.
with the old system the tensioner was unable to compensate for thermal changes within engine, wear and the whip on the belt when running.
If you run a 2.5 with the belt cover off and a new type tensioner fitted you'll see how much the tensioner moves when the engine is revved.
