Look underneath on the passenger side of the gearbox, and you'll see the kickdown solenoid held on with three 13mm bolts.
Before you undo them, gauge how much play/slack you have in the wire to the leverAs this will have to be put back exactly right for it to work properly

Once this is removed, you will be able to access the overdrive band adjuster, and while you're there with the correct spanners, you may as well do the "intermediate" or 2nd gear band![]()
Slacken off the the nut, while using another spanner on the squared bolt from turning![]()
Now wind in the squared bolt by up to about 5 or 10 lbft(making sure that the nut doesn't bottom out, giving you a false reading)
Now undo the squared bolt by 2 complete turns (or if you prefer, 1 and 3/4)
Now tighten up the locknut, without allowing the squared bolt to loose it's setting (don't allow it to turn with the nut)
Do the same for the other one and refit the kickdown solenoid![]()
Job done![]()
If that doesn't cure the problem, then you need the mod![]()

I tried the simplest thing first - adjusting the bands.
Band at the rear of gearbox was fine.
Has to screw in the band at front of gearbox 5 turns before it reached 10 ft lb tightness.
then backed it out 2 turns and locked it off.
Result:
Took it for a 20km run, and gearbox now changes perfectly- even when hot.
I'll take it for a longer run tomorrow to really test it out, but it would appear that tightening the bands solved the problem.
I'm furious at the local ford dealer who baldly stated that a reco transmisison for $3400 was needed to solve this problem.
Don't know whether they are liars, cheats, or just plain incompetent.
Please PM me your Paypal address, and I'll send you $50 on behalf of our grateful taiko group.
