Oil pressure

Postby Terry » Thu Sep 07, 2006 10:10 pm

At the risk of getting ever more complicated.
Forget oil TEMPERATURE only racers need worry about it.
How can you say the temperature sender is simple when it supplies a graduated scale, and the oil pressure switch is difficult when it is an on/off switch set to 'go' at a given pressure ?
The tolerences within the engine are very fine so it is not inconceivable there will be residual pressure, in a stop /start situation!.

There is no conceivably situation where installing an oil pressure gauge will be detrimental to your vehicle (unless you f**k up the installation)
I got a little black book with me poems in

I was just making sure that the connection was the RIGHT kind ;) which will make sure I don't get it wrong.

Temperature is simple since it moves as you say in graduation where as a switch by nature of its construction appears simple but can stick.

I was thinking out loud as far as the stop start thing. If you start your engine from cold then sure the light will come up as you turn the key but if you were to stop 10-15mins later the light might not come on since there is residual pressure, that is what I meant by it starting to make sense.
This is beginning now to appear to be a simple bolt on job, it is the descriptions of various gauges that is now the problem  that and knowing which size to go for, but that will be pod size dependant as I didn't like the way Guy88 had mounted his.

Adding the picture in case others have not seen it ;)

To Guy88 (who I am sure is still reading this and wondering what daft question I will ask next ;) ) Now you have the Amby pod, which had a replacement plate anyway, I would have mounted all 3 gauges in that and ran switches from the stock postions around the instrument cluster. Ok that is just me but thought I would say it, before someone posted up that who cares where something gets mounted. I have recently replaced my dash and no way am I putting any holes in it that weren't already there. Plus mine is a MK5 so the Pod option is a no go for me anyway.

It is as simple as finding a guage and kit and bolting it on  the only guage you need to look for is oil PRESSURE. unless you want any more dont wory about them. all the kits come with a set of instructions

As for my switches there arnt enough free places as standard adn i couldnt get the right symbols

Ok so point me in the direction of the right kit then :)

What have you got on the other switches, most Transits only had 2 of the switches used.
Rear Fogs = 1
Front Fogs = 2
Interior Load Light = 3
Front Strobes = 4 which should be connected to the roof spining lights
So that leaves at least 2 free or is it 4 free...can't remember now :?
Driving lights would be wired through the stalk for full beam and flash
only asking as the symbols could be pretty much interchangable if you use your imagination. I may have some lying around somewhere that I am sure with a little effort could be made to show a different symbol ?
I know that with a fully loaded Tourneo there would be heater screens etc switches but the MK3/4 was nice with the switches in that they are not 'handed' like the MK5.

As for mounting gauges in the Mk5 dash I have the 2 single din slots in mine and use one for a stereo and have a proper plate in the other for 3 60mm gauges.

I already thought of that as I have a single DIN dash plate and a single DIN radio to use but I just don't want to go down that road just yet perhaps something for the future as after I have swapped the door speakers over for some 6x9's, I know I will have to mod the doors slightly plus they might not have enough being put up them by the stock radio so once that is done I will make a choice about the radio. I have a spare A pillar cover to which I can fit the pod holder to so putting things back as before won't be difficult.

60mm

Postby Terry » Thu Sep 07, 2006 11:57 pm

60 mm gauges, surely you mean 52 mm or 2 inch ( like a 50 mm
towball is 2 inch :D )
I thought they only came as 52 mm or 80mm then 100 mm and up for rev counters (could be tachometers :D ) & speedo's.

Jeez I am getting the hang of this ....

Must mean 52mm as I have just measured a single DIN radio and it measures 52mm on the metal body and 58mm on the plastic facia (it is a FORD one btw) so unless the other slot on the single DIN dash unit is bigger than a DIN size by some way :?

The guage i got is a TIM guage. it comes with everything except the T piece.

In the pod i have
Front fogs
Interior lights
Spot light switcs so i can change between none, grill and roof
Roof strobes
Grill strobes
Air horn

If you add the rear fogs to this theres not enough room :(

Rear fogs should be around the instrument cluster anyway, top left normally, so that is a gen ford switch most all vans will still have in the breakers.

Same with Front Fogs as the symbol will be the same just put it on the opposite side to the rear Fogs

Interior light should be findable (is that a word ?)

Roof and grill strobes I would have on the same switch.

So at a minimum I have given you enough room for one more gauge in the pod.

If you have drilled loads of holes in the dash that would be easy to find another one in the breakers due to how many MK3/4's get scrapped.

I have just read your How to post. You already have a beacon switch in the proper place with the correct symbol, the one on the bottom leftt. I had the same switch on my last Transit which was an ex BT but all the BT stuff had been removed though the wiring did go up into the roof but since I didn't have or wanted a beacon so I cut back the excess cable.
