Load space bulkhead questions

Postby RoyT » Fri Jun 23, 2006 11:18 pm

Can you still get an 8ft x 4ft plywood sheet in the back of swb 1998 mk5 transit after fitting a bulkhead behind the seats or do you loose some of the length in the back of the van at floor level. Also want to know if they are easy to get hold of one from breakers. Do they make the van any less noisy in the cab. : :)

i got a 19mm ply bulkhead with carpet on the, cab side. ever so quiet cant hear any noises from the back even the time something fell against the door and knocked the handle open   wondered why everyone was pointing
You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

It's too far for me this time. Going south with the caravan this year otherwise might do a detour.

Been to look at a bulkhead today but did'nt buy it and it seems to fit inline with the back of the main support beams which run up up the sides of the van behind the seats. This seems to shorten the load length by about 4" making it about 2" too short for plywood sheets to be loaded lying down in the back of the van. :(
If I fitted a bulkhead it would seem that I would then have to modify the bulkhead at the bottom by moving it forward in some way to allow me to continue loading plywood sheets.
Still interested in a bulkhead but will have to be cheap if it needs to be modified, or will have make my own out of small box steel and some 12mm plywood. Don't know what's best, still working that one out.
Found out the ford fixings are about £15-00 but because it needs the special tool to put it in, the job gets too expensive to fix them in the ford way. Going to look into the winged type fingings as suggested somewhere else on the forum.

Finally got bulkhead fitted a few weeks back

Postby RoyT » Fri Sep 15, 2006 8:32 pm

Just thought I would post an update.
Finally got bulkhead fitted a few weeks back. Very pleased with the difference it makes :D . A lot quieter, cleaner cab, probably cooler in summer and expecting it to be warmer in winter.
Had to do a modification to the bottom of bulkhead to make sure it was long enough for 8ft x 4ft plywood sheets because the the standard fitting seems to have been too far back.
Fitted some foam that I had lying around in front of the bulkhead and its held in place by the seats.
Turned out to be a lot of work to fit but I think its been well worth it.
Make room I'm coming through

now build a false floor and you can use the entire van floor space and store the sheets underneath

I use to have a bulk head in my SWB van but removed it because with it you can not fit 8' x 4' wood lying on the floor (which is what the Ford Transit was designed around), you have to stand it up diagonally in the van.

I was going to cut a 4' 6" x 4" flap in the bottom of the bulkhead but didn't as was too much work and couldn't be bother also i always found the cab felt very enclosed to me, but not every one feels this way, Just me i suppose
