Engine swap on the drive - difficult???

Postby thehangmen » Thu Sep 14, 2006 12:27 pm

Got hold of an engine to replace the siezed unit, the van is stuck on my drive.
The tow home by the AA was a 'mare so I'm pondering on doing the job with a couple of savvy mates on the drive.
Is this asking for trouble...????
Any tips, pitfalls or even advantages?
Is there a 'how-to' on here...?

thanks in advance chaps.

I replaced a 2.0 Petrol engine in a Luton a couple of years ago

Disconnect Prop from gearbox

Remove gearbox from engine (remove gear lever, speedo cable, reverse switch)

Disconnect wires and fuel lines

I used a weight-lifting barbell (no access to engine hoist) and tied ropes to engine, took two of us to remove engine

When replacing engine best to have three people, two to carry and third to align engine mounts...

Re-attach gearbox

Re-bolt Prop, then re-connect wires and fuel lines

You make it sound so simple!!!!! Sounds worth a go. I may be able to get use of a hoist...
I'm wondering about marking things up so they align etc.
Any common pitfalls or oversights anyone had?

Don't forget to do the timing belt before you fit the new engine! You don't know the last time it was replaced, the belt is only about £10 (full kit is more, but worth a thought), and you will be sorry you didn't if it goes after the engine is fitted, could do big damage!

EDIT - make that CAM belt! I had been reading somethin else about timing before I wrote this!

Just take your time and write down which wire connection goes where...

Better still if phone has a camera on it, take pics of wire connections and fuel pipes

Make sure to mark which fuel pipe is Flow & Return...

Try not to look at it as one BIG Job, Think of it as a several jobs

1. Note wires and fuel connections
2. Remove Prop
3. Remove Gearbox
etc, etc, etc

Then it's not so daunting

Paul

PS. Before you start go and get some beers in the fridge chilling for when you have finished...

Make life easy for yourself....

Hire an engine crane for the day, about £15-£20.

Leave the prop and gearbox alone!

Take the battery and starter off.

Remove bonnet.

Remove rad and front slam panel/grill etc.

Disconnect all fuel/water pipes and tie them up out of the way, same for any wires.

Remove all the bell housing to engine blots, then the engine mount bolts.

Place a small jack under the gearbox and while you are using the crane to lift the engine untill it comes off the mounts wind/pump the jack up to the bottom of the box.

Check the clutch and rear oil seal whle you are at it and like fFred says...Change the cam belt!

The engine will take a little jiggling to get back on the splines when putting it back in, if it wont go after a few attempts use a spanner to turn the engine over slightly and try again.

With three of you even a first attempt shouldnt take you more that half a day :D :D

Leave the box in, just unbolt engine from box, remover the front pannel and rad and fuel pipes , Ex ect, you can get em out by using 2 trolly jacks but a hoist is easyer :D

would i be showing off if i said i fitted a 2.0 petrol into the front of a mk2 with just my bare hands on my own, lifted it into the engine bay and onto the gearbox with no lifting gear or outside help at all, just 1 man power!!!!!! they don't call me big john for nothing, lifted an rs turbo engine out of the front of a mk3 escort on my own once as well. no wonder my back is nackered these days, killed it in my youth!!!

only done about 10 hours in the gym my hole life, my size is from jobs with lots of heavy lifting, and eating to much. 1 job i did was delivering about 450 bags of spuds a day to chip shops, by hand, thats 11 tonnes a day ( about 5 hours a day of actual delivering), could pick 3 bag up straight off the floor in one go and then walk god knows how far to the shop, thats 12 stone in weight, but thats what you get use to, don't think i could do it these days, but doing that sort of thing saves going to the gym and it gives you a more natural strength and power,
