Rust, How bad is this?

Postby xychix » Sat May 04, 2013 11:01 am

I noticed that the paint on the bottom started falling off.
The place if just before the left rear wheel where there is a piece from the chassis to the side of the van (I don't have a sliding door on this side)

when i poked it a little bit basically the steel underneat fell apart. I ripped some paint of to find this:

Straight from below.

Would this be a MOT fail? What else to expect based on this? or is it a beauty thing that I can get rid of after MOT.
How to address this? I've got basic welding skills but no good mig welder here.

1 month before MOT at the moment (or the dutch version of it)

yep that's a fail point, they all go there just get a couple of quotes as anyone who has done a few welding repairs to transits would definately seen this before....If you can cut out the rust with an angle grider and make a new plate to wrap around the box and cut some pieces for the sill oh and use a wire brush on an angle grinder to clean off the paint and underseal around the repair ready for someone else to do the welding it will save you alot of money for only an hour or 2's effort..Just dont forget to wear eye protection :!:

tnx for the quick reply.

I'll get myself an angle grinder with grind plate cutting plate and steel brush plate.
Is all the material needed for these pieces 0.8 mm sheetmetal? I'd assume the bracket that connects the outside to the frame to be thicker?!

it is ok to have something welded over the cut out it or does it have to fit exactly IN the hole?

1mm i would think .8 is a bit thin

I'm intending to weld it myself, I've found a cheap ass 60 Euro Mig (made for small gass bottles 0,9 Kilo Ferm Mig 100). I did a welding course one day so I should be fine spotwelding a well made piece that fits around the current shizzle.

it's likely not the last weld she'll need so I'd better get my #*# around it.

Fitting a patch that overlaps is fine, but it must be welded all the way around all of the edges, not just spotted or stitched on, using 1 mm or 1.2 mm will make welding it easier for you as you will be less likely to blow holes in it, also a set of tin snips can be really handy, also using 1 mm thick cutting discs will be far neater and nicer to use than a standard cutting disc. The cutting discs stainless steel for are sometimes cheaper to buy and last allot longer than ordinary metal cutting discs  The secret to getting a good weld and making a good job or it is to make sure you have cleaned everything back to bright clean steel before you try welding it...oh and don't forget to disconnect the battery just in case... 8)

To own a transit and not know how to weld is like having a cross channel dingy and not be able to swim!!!!

I'm on my third mk5 and I've had several rotten Sierras and Granadas over the years and I've never welded anything in my life!! But, my mother has a Ka that needs welding so I've bought myself a cheap second-hand mig and decided to have a go, I'll let you know how it goes....

thats more or less where I am as well. Are you welding with gas ? or the crappy flux core?
During my course Mig welding was easy, and is is with a 1000+ Euro's machine and no thinner than 2mm to weld... I bed I could electrode weld 2mm.

The advice I was given by someone who can weld (very well I might I add, you should see what he did with the spring hangers on my 190!) was not to bother with gasless and not to bother with co2 and use argon, so I'm in the process of getting all the kit together and having a go but to be honest I still haven't welded a stitch yet.

We'll have to start somewhere.

A full weld. by stiching and then filling ? (I don't want the construction to twist while welding because of the heat)
At least my first job is a decent challenge then (I remember my first job on my Kia Sorento, replacing the turbo... Ended up calling in help because the most impossible bolt to reach snapped..)

I intend to weld with a 0.8 mm wire and 85% argon 15% co2. The issue is that the FERM MIG 100 wire feed isn't as nice and constant as I'd want it to be.. And I'm hoping my FERM MIG 100 will be able to use 5KG wire spools instead of the 1kg spools (with almost the same price as the 5kg ones)

small bottles are useless. get a co2 fire extinguisher of ebay ,.better still a pub bottle then go to a fire extinguisher company, get mine filled for a fiver everytime.
no need for argon.

What is the location of the VIN number ? Should I take care welding / replacing in certain area's?

My van is a 1999 / 2000 year, VIN number is on a plate in footwell (popped to the steel) and below the windscreen in the dash.
Should I expect to find it elsewhere as well?
