The old girl has been getting slower and slower on the hills and using more and more diesel over the past year but when we were reduced to 1st gear grinds on some of the hills on the A30 in Devon and less than 30mpg I thought I ought to take a look.
The first thing I noticed was that when the throttle pedal was on the floor the throttle body linkage didn't look like it was opening the butterfly enough.....hmmmm
On removing the throttle body intake hose I noticed that at some time in the past it had split and been taped up. ! The tape had now slipped and was blocking 1/3rd of the intake venturi ! blimey no wonder the old gal had slowed down some. This is how the garage left it when the van went in for repairs and a full service and 40 point checkup last year.
I pulled the throttle linkage off and with the pedal on the floor I adjusted it so that I had just over full throttle . I replaced the linkage and adjusted the throttle stop screw so that the butterfly was horizontal at full throttle, just before the pedal hit the floor.
I next re-taped the throttle intake hose temporarily until I can order a new hose. Hopefully they are still available ?
Can't wait to try it out on the hills around the village tomorrow.
