right just fitted new injector pump to the van checked the timing three times but now the van is smoking white smoke and it wont rev up is the ecu causeing that does it need to go back to dealers to program the pump to the ecu

its a 98 and a lucas pump just spoke to the dealer and they reckon its air

white/grey smoke is usually a sign of retarded timing.

That can be caused by air in the system because the fuel pressure is used to push the advance piston. It could also be a problem with the advance system.

Whats been done to it?

The pump isn't programed to the PCM in the same way as current vehicles. And the EPIC system can cope with up to 8 degrees of bolt up error, outside of those 8 degrees and the engine light will come on.

I know you've set the timing correctly with pins but allow me to suggest a couple of things to try


run the engine from a gallon can directly into the pump.....if it runs ok, you've an air ingress issue.

Slacken the 4 bolts on the pump pulley and move the pump round a fraction and see how it runs.

I've seen a few of these have pump body alignment issues where by the peg hole isn't in the correct position in relation to the pump housing.

Also.......the feed and return pipes are in the correct ports aren't they

thanks nighthauk the two plastic pipes on top of the injector pumps the seal were gone as when they have been pulled out which he should left on the new pump. But he pulled them out to stick the old ones on dont ask me y. the top injector pump pin was hard to withdraw when withdrawn you couldnt put top pin in to realign had to move pump a bit on the bolts to get pin back in. But i wont know if its that till i put new pipes on

The little rubber olive seals should be fitted to the pipe between the washer and the insert in the end of the pipe. the pipes are tightened to about 6lbft.....bu99er all !

if they are done too tight, they'll allow air in.

The timing pin should be a snug fit with the engine in time, have a look at the hole in the pulley, you should be able to see the hole clearly through the pulley, if so, it's close enough to being right.....providing the hole is in the right place on the pump

nic one for replying nighthawk you can see the pump aligment hole but is there a timeing mark for the pump on the houseing plate and the rubbers are knackerd thanks for telling me not to over tighten them i wouldnt of known that but do i have to buy the new pipes ur just new rubbers

The rubbers used to be a seperate item, so i'd suspect they still are.
If you can't get them from a ford parts dealer, a lucas diesel dealer will still have them.

Re the pump timing. the pump should have a small dowel on it to key it into the alloy timing plate....if it's not there the 3 bolts holding the pump to the plate should get it close enough.

The only thing lucas and their dealers put on the pump to indicate the position of the pump housings was a small scribe mark near the pump timing hole, unless you know what your looking at you'd mistake it for a scratch.

well this is starting to puzzel me now as ive done just about everthink nighthawk has told me to try moving pulley bolts on on the injector pump putting pipes in gallon of diesel but still back where i started i didnt realy know much about diesels when i started but as this saga goes on am picking it up slowy but i realey need this van running because im going to scotland working for three months so it vital i get it sorted but looking at the engine scratching my head isnt going to do it am going to put anew fuel filter on it today and then try again with no joy i bet but idont think i would be this far down the line without the help and support of the forum best thing i did joining anyway id better get back to the van other wise itlle never get done thanks for all your comments sparky

did you have your pump reconed????? were did you get the replacement pump from????? is engine management light going out ok?????

brand new pump no engine light on garage told us its air but not having much luck bleeding it

did you fit the pump or did the garage fit it, also what made you fit a pump, what was the symptoms before, who diagnosed the fault, i'm asking this as it sounds like it could be something else thats the problem

alright IAN THE VAN WOULD GO OVER FIFTY THE DEALERS PLUG IT IN AND TOLD ME IT WAS THE PUMP BOUGHT ANEW PUMP OF JIM ON THE FORUM FITTED IT ARE SELVES LIND THE PINS UP FOR TIMING NEW CAMBELT MOVED THE PULLEY ON THE PUMP ADJUST BOLTS THREE DIFFRENT MARKS STILL BLOWING WHITE SMOKE WONT REV UP STILL BEEN TOLD AIR IN SYSTEM IDLES LIKE THERS NOTHINK WRONG

If its not air, and its not the Pump, then it could be water......its just a shot in the dark but is it using a lot of water?

Can you check the fuel delivery pressure?

Undo the feed pipe from the filter to the pump, get someone to spin the starter over........is fuel squirting out of the pipe?

After 5 seconds or so the lift pump on the side of the engine should have delivered a decent amount of fuel.

I'd suggest holding a container under the pipe or you'll have diesel everywhere

If it doesn't do anything, have the lift pump checked out.

if you've tried to advance the pump discarding the pin hole and it still made no improvement, then air ingress is something you need to eliminate, if you gave the pump a gravity feed from the gallon can and it still didn't cure it a pump or injector concern would be the next logical point of investigation
