Cambelt tensioner.

Over the last couple of months I had notcied my van had started to get a bit sluggish and smoking a little. As I don't really do many miles I hadn't really taken much notice or even bothered to look any further into it.

Well last night before I went on a slightly longer run than normal up to London I thought I had better do a quick check of things under the bonnet and I noticed that there was a funny noise coming from the front of the engine. After removing the alternator and powersteering belt the only thing left to check was the Cam Belt, to which I find the tensioner had gone tits up and the belt was as slack as a yack.

Luckly for me I had a new cambelt kit with tensioner in the back of the van. So 45 minutes later it was all back together and ready to go, I managed to do all of this without taking the rad out and in the smart clothes that I was ment to wearing to the restaurant . Anyway it's all up and running now and is like driving a new van again which kinda makes me wonder how long it had been knackered

Unbelieveable good luck (that you spotted it) And even better that you managed it in only 45mins Must be some kinda wizz I also changed mine with rad on as I didn't fancy disconnecting my auto pipes It took me 45 mins to get my fan off

some kind of magician takes me 1hr to get the bloody rocker cover off any advice on doing the belt??? as i want to do the belt on my new engine before it goes in

The trick is to leave the viscous coupling in place and just undo the 4 bolts that hold fan to it and remove that.

Yeah make sure you change the tensioner as well!

The trick is to leave the viscous coupling in place and just undo the 4 bolts that hold fan to it and remove that.

Tried that Not enough room But i will admit I also didn't touch the slam panel that could have given the extra room. And there again who wants to disturb painted bolts it can only go all rusty on you and there's enough of that built in by Fords

I thought you'd done one before on your current engine? Fairly easy job to do, makes life easier having the locking pins but I seem to remember someone saying you can use the shanks of drill bits.

I tryed removing the four bolts yesterday when i struggled to remove the viscious fan. All it did was made the pully wheel flop about..... The fan stayed exactly where it was. How did you get the cam belt cover off without removing the fan?

I did remove the fan, undo the 4 bolts on the front that bolt the fan to the viscous coupling and then it should just pull off. You can also remove the 4 bolts that hold the pulley on behind the fan as that makes it easier to get the cambelt cover off.

Yeah make sure you change the tensioner as well!

Drill bits for me; 13mm=crankshaft
8mm=camshaft
then either 6 or 9mm for pump depending on year/Bosch/Lucaas.
Try a 6mm for your Lucas pump

I didn't see this before, yes mate you need to take the slam panel out. I tried without taking it out and gave in and just removed it.

ye but i basically stood back while my old man done it im not very good with precision jobs so it was best left to him am hoping i can get him to do this belt and clutch for me

is it wise to put the cambelt cover back on or is it safe to leave it off
