serious headache now with this van

problem 1 - oil leak - no idea where this is coming from but its getting excessive now - seems like its coming from the sump but cant see where its dripping from - sent my brother underneath and he said its collecting or coming from somewhere around the gearbox

problem 2 - brakes are feeling very spongy - thought this was the brake fluid as it seemed low - topped it up - still got the problem

problem 3 - possibly to do with above - it started out as a scraping noise coming from the back - the axle was a little whiney so i ignored it but now the scraping has gone and it is now like a clanking - sounds like something loose rattling - almost like theres a metal bar trailing along behind when driving - the noise continues even whilst braking - again been under and cant see anything loose tried listening as driving but cant figure out where its coming from - seems axle or wheels at rear but cant tell - seems to be more center than the wheel but cant really tell

im not sure if this is the same problem that im having with brakes - sometimes have to pump them a little to get the van to stop

should really get it serviced but no cash and it will end up on the scrap heap i reckon if they list all its problems lol

You need to wash it all off and see where its coming from - common places are the oil seals at either end of the crankshaft

Start by having a good look at the propshaft bearings, then I would be looking inside the drums

gonna book it in for a service i think - went to hit the brakes today and nothing - had to really pump them - that rattle at the back is an occasional grinding now - best to get someone to look at it i reckon an if it ends up on the scrap heap so be it is my attitude with it now - sh*t heap it is a good engine in a rusty can shoulda held out for a lwb high top wich is what i need more

yup - good drums and pads - just need bleeding

propshaft bearings - what bearings you mean this scrap piece of metal hanging loosely where the bearing should be

but then on the other hand i was robbed of 120 for just an exhaust for the car last week so

just glad its all sorted now - said its in good cond underneath too for the age - just a tattyish shell

reet-o im seriously pissed off now - had this thing serviced and it feels no different except for the prop shaft
brakes are stil spongy - tok it backandaparently they bled themandgave them a looking at but found nothing wrong - i have to pump them before theyll grip its damn dangerous in town traffic when im raking all the time

2nd gear has a judder now like its trying to stall and above all its lost a load of power

said i can take it in tomorrow but any ideas off here what it could be before i take it - that way i can tell them to look at this and that rather than going in and having to point things out to them

When I said that, I had assumed that they had actually fixed it
If the brakes aren't working, take it back and read them the riot act Faulty brakes just aren't acceptable!
Get them to check that the front discs are in good condition and the vent fins aren't rusty

before i took it in i said i need a service - that the brakes are spongy not sure if theyll need new pads - thers a slight oil oeak at the sump

was told it would be 100 inc new oil, filters and the brakes

went down later in the day to see how they were getting on

it was me that pointed out the prop shaft bearing had not only worn but was nolonger even there -he then quoted me an extra 70 if i wanted this repairing

i then went to pick it up and they said they were still waiting on a new bearing - then i pointed out a bolt missing from the wishbone where the balljoint attatches - i would assume if they had looked at the brakes this would have been picked upon - especially in a service - this hasnow been fixed- though ive not looked yet

i just dont want to take this van downagain and they do the work and tell me to pay because in all honesty i feel it should have been done as part of the service i feel like i paid 100 for a service that hasnt really been done as all the problems still there - i cant be sure they did an oil change - im certain they didnt - when iwent back they took the dipstick out - the oil was still black and said they just needed to top it up after leaving it to settle but should it not have been fresh oil on the dipstick as it hasnt been burnt yet?"? havent looked to see if filters have been changed but will be doin in the morning

just a total headache

In all fairness, a service doesn't really cover any repair work at all, but anything amiss should be reported and an additional price quoted.

........... BUT, in my opinion, any professional mechanic, should never allow a vehicle to leave his workshop with defective brakes

wich to mesays that 100 quid will have my brakes sorted - wich atm theyre not
but then i cant be sure they DID do anything to them- and he could argue he did and that any extra work is extra pay

i dont really know where i stand on this one - though the bleed nipple shouldbe clean and look like its been used if they did bleed them so ill look at them before i take the van anywhere

I agree with you, if the price was £100 with the brakes sorted, then they should be sorted, unless he phoned and told you that it couldn't be done for that price, but it would now cost £££
If he didn't say anything, they should be done properly for the quoted price

precisely - they feel exactly the same if not worse than when they went in - its not just a slight problem -sometimes i go for the brake and can press all the way down with nothing - other times i have to press down release then press down again before the pads grip - fookin scary at junctions when you press and aint sure your gonna stop

we'll see what is said tomorrow i guess but if he wants cash i aint paying - cant afford to be chucking cash at it i could get a cheap decent working van for what this thing is starting to cost me
