2.5 auto wont shift into top gear when hot

Hi,

We have a 99 Transit bus, 2.5 turbo auto.
It's has an easy life. We bought it 2 years ago when it had about 125,000k on the clock, and we have done about 10,000 km since.

A while ago it just stopped shifting into top gear after engine has warmed up. Just stays in third gear.
(Shifts fine into top gear when engine is coldish)

Took it into local ford dealer, who pronounced that "there is an internal gearbox problem", and that a reco gearbox (cost $3400) is required.

To my mind, it seems like some sensor or something has failed, as the gearbox works perfectly except for this problem.

Can anyone throw some light on what components would be involved in the failure to shift to top gear when the engine has warmed up?

We are a non profit musical organisation, and the van is used to get our equipment around to performances, and a repair cost of $3400 is something we don't really need.

The first thing to check is the fluid level and colour, make sure its a nice red and not brown!

I assume being the 2.5Di Turbo it has the A4LDE Gearbox.

It would be an idea to change the filter, this is internal and means taking the sump off the gearbox and replacing all the fluid, you can get a filter and sump gasket from Ford (not sure about in NZ though).

Gerarbox Fluid level is fine, and so is the colour.
Don't know if it is an A4LDE gearbox.
There's 3 speeds on the indicator, and the shift lever sticks up out of the floor.

if its turbo di it will be A4LD and its not going into overdrive ,speak to andyg he is the expert on A4LD boxes!
