1999 (V-Reg) Banana Engine into 1997 (R-Reg) Van???

Postby tractive-effort » Tue Aug 29, 2006 10:42 pm

Is it a straight swop?? I reckon so, but just checking! My engine is now burning 6-7 litres of oil per 1000 miles  and surely is on it's last legs? Though it starts runs and stops fine and there is no smoke or leaks! :?: I have a fantastically low mileage Banana Engine (40,000 miles) to go in, but wanted to make sure my old engine died with dignity.....

You sure you have your dates the right way around, banana engines were pre 97 unless it is a camper, campers tend to be late registered but older components.

Yeh - EGR has been disconnected by me a few days after buying the engine!! As long as the engine/gearbox mounts are the same then I'm ok, visually it all looks fine, but was just checking with you guys to make sure!

Many Thanks!!

Cam you sure? As the banana is an old design, sure some might have hung around in the back of the warehouse but for that amount of years?
I only mean it in so far as a few old design whatevers are always going to pop up but...well, are you sure?

Ok, seems rather shortsighted to have the two manifolds running along side each other for that length of time but since when did Fords ever do something sensible.

Banana was the newer engine, it defo ran right up till 2000 and Mark will tell you that it was a free upgrade in the laters years from the 70ps.

That makes more sense, though strange that the banana was a standalone PS. As for the free upgrade, that also makes sense to dump the unused stock...read OLD stock, as free upgrades are rarely of a true benifit (though a slight increase in power would be seen by many to be a benifit) makes you wonder though if it was so good why did Fords have to offer the 'upgrade' if not to dump unsold parts. The price difference prior to the 'upgrade' must have been rather high.
I would like to have more power but then I have fiddled with the pump and it is fine and a 6ps power increase I am not really going to notice so if I was (at the time) speccing an engine I wouldn't have gone just a small step up.
