what type of engine and carb is in my 1991 Transit 120

Postby Ceejay » Mon Jun 13, 2005 8:09 pm

Hi I'm Ceejay and I wondered if somebody could give me some information on my transit based motorhome? I bought it last july from a motorhome dealer in Exeter and have started having problems with it miss firing, it is a Ford Transit 120 1993cc petrol engine. It was first registered in 1991 and has only done 37,700 miles. When I initially went to pick up the van I had to hang about for a few hours as they said they had to fit a new diaphram to the carb as it was misfiring. I have since done only 4000 miles over the last 11 months, and last week while being 100 miles from home I had to call out the AA as it started to missfire and I had a job to keep the engine ticking over at traffic lights etc. The AA chap played about with it for ages and finnaly said that the carb was worn and needed chainging, which was a common problem with the petrol transit. Can anyone tell me the make of the original carb that is giving the trouble and what type of carb I need to have fitted, and would the engine in my transit be a PINTO engine? PS how do I post a picture of my Transit

If it's the original carb (has Ford stamped on the side), it will be a VV carb, generally regarded as cr*p. Bin it and fit either the replacement little (single choke) Webber carb, or for a bit more oomph the twin choke Webber. Not sure why the carb would lead to amisfire though, thats often down to elelctrics. A dodgy diaphram usually causes loss of power.

Would a webber fit straight on or would I need some kind of converstion kit? also when I rev it sounds as though the exhaust is blowing would this account for the misfire?]

You will need a matching inlet manifold to swap to a webber!!

Although i doubt the exhaust is the problem - its always best to get everything right before fitting a new carb - so i'd sort the exhaust 1st see if it makes a difference.
:D
hope this helps!

ps welcome ceejay :D

ps welcome ceejay :D[/ :x Thanks for the help. I have just been on to haynes to get a workshop manual for a 1991 transit with a1993cc petrol engine, and was told they only publish a manual from 86 to 89 and do not do a manual for transits with petrol engines manufactured after 1990 as they did not sell very well! "If I bought a banana with my luck the bugger would be empty" I will have to see if anybody else published a workshop manual ]

The small single choke Webber is designed as replacement, so you don't need a new inlet manifold, just need one for the twin choke. I doubt the blowing exaust is to blame for a misfire too. The less resistance an exaust gives to the engine, the better, hence racing and performance exausts are virtually straight through.

That makes alot of sense thinking about it I have sent fred an email with a picture of the van and also another one with a picture of the engine to post on the forum for me hopefully some one will recognise the engine as a pinto or whatever anyway once again thanks for all the help]

All the single choke conversions i've had have had an adaptor plate to fit the webber to the VV manifold.
You take the 1 long and 1 short stud out the use the allen headed screws to bolt the adapter down and the carb bolts to that, it all comes in the webber kit when new.
You may find an early Mk4 cortina 1.6 had the correct manifold as they came with single webbers (before ford went backwards with the VV).
But to be honist i havn't done a single webber conversion for 8+ years cos beleive it or not my VV works :o

Apparantly there was a fire in their spannish factory and they are now as rare as rocking horses doodas, and will not be shipped to the UK untill mid August. Martins the company I purchased the van from rang me yesterday and said, if I can source one before July the 27th it will be covered by the vans warranty. So if any of you out there Know where theres a brand knew single choke webber sat on a shelf in a Autoshop some where please please help!! ]

ceejay have you tried Webber direct? do a search for them on the web, or if you have a local tame parts palce, ask if they will order it for you. It will help if they already deal with or have an account with webber.
