Hi folks,
im new here, just joined up as i need some advice on my Transit.
It's a mk3 2.5di,registered early 1990(G),ex ambulance, now campervan. i've had it about 4 years now and never really had much trouble with it apart from the timing/cam belt going on me,oh and all the rusty bits i've had to cut out and weld up and getting it through its MOT can be a bit of an ordeal. Well,i've always just run it on diesel and it has run fine, until a couple of weeks ago when i did a 50/50 mix with KTC veg oil from Asda,£14 for 15ltr,bargain i thought, got 30 ltr and topped the van up likewise with diesel. It started up and ran,bit smokey at first, smell made me hungry. Great i thought,i'll go for a good run in tomorrow. Next day i got in and only made it to the end of the road when it just cut out, would it start again, not a chance. Pushed it back up the road and parked it up.

What did i do wrong?

I think i have tried most things now to try and get it running within my humble mechanical capabilities but to no success im afraid so please people, any advice would be appreciated. :?

Im new myself but i know you need to be using a Bosch pump and Change filter as it can bring crap up from bottom of tank, assuming if youve run low on fuel.

Im sure one of the veterans will come along soon and help...good bunch on here.

Cheers,i hope so as im getting a bit despondent.

Definately a Bosch pump fitted, has an external cold start solenoid attached to the left side as you look at it.

I'm just wondering if the injection pump had got a bit tired and then when it had to suck up this thicker stuff it just gave up the ghost, there is no lift pump fitted, just straight through the filter from the tank.

Just hope someone can shed some light,it may be something simple.

Lets see what tomorrow brings.

i had a simalar problem when i first put veg oil in with some diesel, 50/50 mix, same oil from asda £14.00 for 15 ltr, van run fine for about 60 miles, then when working on the power stearing pumpit broke down. lol (without the engine running) i found that i had fuel leaking out the back of the pump just befor were the pipes connect, changed the rear seal and it has been fine ever since.

as already mentioned, by putting oil into your tank, it will drag crap up from the bottom of the tank and send it through to your filter, it will block prity quick and that may be your problem, (myself i have not changed my diesel filter for about 6 years, but keep a spare on board ready for when it does need changing, )(if it aint broke dont fix it, lol)

one other thing, i am not sure on this, but every transit i have seen with a bosch pump has a seperate lift pump on the right hand side of the engine under the exhaust manifold. the only ones i have seen without the lift pump are fitted with the older lucas cav pump. that will have a hand primmer on top of the filter housing. and a cold start?? but others will know more on this.

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=113459 this thread has a good photo of the bosch pump.
my advise may not be right, but I like to give my 10p worth, and an answer even if wrong is nice to see.

Now that is an unusual pump!

Its a bosch (so veg oil shouldn't be a problem) fitted to Mk3 turbos!

But, if the oil doesn't do it any good it won't be easy to find another one the same

Just wondering how well the veg oil mixed with the diesel , did you take the van out for a few miles before leaving it overnight if not you may be trying to drag neat veg through the pump.

Hi,i put the veg oil and diesel into the tank 5ltr at a time alternating between the two to hopefully mix it up well but i suppose it may have settled over night. I have since drained the tank and inserted just diesel, drained fuel filter and replaced it full of diesel. It doesn't appear to be pumping to the injectors,i have tried the fuel line in a bottle of diesel and it draws it into the pump but then nothing. I have removed the stop solenoid spring and plunger and tried it with easy start,it draws the fuel out of the bottle but not to the injectors,
I THINK,so must be returning to tank?????

So, what other problems have you guys found when using veg oil ? is soya ok ? is rapeseed oil ok? some of the veg oils are of a heavier viscosity (thicker) than others, so would we all be wiser to use a much more diluted with derv mix, I`m not prepared to risk my IP untill I`m a little more informed of the downside of using veg oil, I am aware of the initial monetary savings of veg oil as opposed to the cost of derv, but the cost of replacing, or even refurbing the IP would make it un-advisable, ie, the pump seals, down time for my van would mean no work, which I cannot risk, I feel there`s so much more to learn before I take `the leap` so`s to speak. Your opinions are more than welcome, Steve

I'm now a week & 150 miles using 60 derv/40 sunflower & 200:1 2 stroke with no issues , starts 1st time, the same as on 100% derv , runs quieter & pulls the same. Have spent sooo much time reading up & for me the risk is worth taking, stocked up on sunflower oil now so i'm going to keep at it .

Will be doing some experimenting with higher ratio svo for longer journeys & lower svo as the temp starts to drop over the coming months .I expect to have some teething issues so on the lookout for a spare pump just in case the seals go.

Anyone tried Veggieboost :?:

I run my van on whatever crap i can get hold of.

I settle it, filter it, check for water and it goes in at around 20% derv mix.

Sorted.

I think I'm going to try a replacement pump,a newer one if possible. Bearing in mind there is no lift pump can anyone recommend the right pump to draw all the way from tank unaided. I would like to stick with a Bosch and possibly prefer not trying to wire in an electric pump. If you know the number that would be good.

May I ask how long you have been using veg oil ? Also, does anyone know if the veg oil and derv mix well, what I mean is, does it all become `one well mixed fuel`, if you get my drift, Steve
