If it's a '98 engine, then it should be the 28mm belt :)

Depends if your bottom pulley takes the 25.4mm or 28mm belt although I've fitted a 28mm belt instead of a 25.4mm and it just wears the sides away over time and needs re-tensioning after a few hundred miles so not ideal but not the end of the world either.

Ordered a "kit" from ford £100 all in expensive? but surely can't go wrong with the original ford part.

Before removing the Lucas pump I rotated the engine to line up the timing holes. The cam pulley and pump pulley were correctly lined up but I noticed the fly wheel was slightly off and I couldn’t get a 13mm bit in. I was wondering what to do now? Any help appreciated. I’m busy replacing the Lucas with a Bosch.

There are two holes you can get the flywheel locking pin in but with your being slightly out you got to think it’s been timed up wrong there are posts on here about the two holes in the flywheel.
The only way I can think of to check without removing the head is both valves will be fully closed on top dead centre

Thanks for your reply. I don’t understand what you meant by the two valves should be closed. Do I have to remove the engine top cover to check?

I’m wondering if I mistakenly pinned the wrong flywheel hole. I wasn’t aware there are two. I couldn’t get a 13mm in but managed to get a 12mm in deep.

My question, is it possible to pin both the pump and cam together with the wrong flywheel hole before removing the timing belt from a working engine?

Having tried to crank the engine could I have done damage? It did fire once but didn’t take.

Back in the day used to do loads of di belts used to lock the flywheel first making sure it was on the correct stroke by the cam and pump pins lining up or very close and maybe needing a wiggle to get them in never had a problem it was only when reading on here years later that there are two holes in the flywheel when fitting the new belt a common mistake people do is not slacking off the four nuts on the pump drive so the gear can turn and not throw the pump timing out when the tension is set then retighten the nuts.

Forget what I said about the valves been closed to determine top dead centre on no 1 as that would have only helped if you were checking the timing before removing the belt .

Unless anyone else on the forum can think of away of of been sure of the correct flywheel hole to use you could remove no 1 injector and use a dti gauge or head off to find top dead centre if you have timed it up wrong the only damage you may have done is bend a pushrod or snap a rocker arm

Thanks. I’ll turn the crankshaft by hand to see if there is another hole in the flywheel when the cam and pump line up again. I’ve read that the correct hole accepts a 13mm. I couldn’t get the 13mm in but the 12mm went in fine. So now I’m thinking I may have pinned the wrong flywheel hole even though the cam and pump were pinned.

Maybe my mistake was with the Lucas pump and belt still on I pinned only the pump and cam and I assumed that the flywheel hole was correctly lined up too but it wouldn’t accept a 13mm bit, only 12mm

The second hole in the flywheel is 180 degrees from the correct one, is smaller than the correct one, and doesn't go all the way through.
If you use the correct 13mm timing peg, pushed right in, you can't go wrong :)

Turned the crankshaft until I found another much smaller hole. The position of the pump pulley isn’t in its pin position. Here are the relative photos;
