Thanks for your replies! Im going to have another look this weekend and see if i can get those bolt off, at least to see if the belt is actually still on. And try to figure if fuel is getting to the injectors. Does the Lucas epic have a fuel stop solenoid that i can check? I can see what looks like an array of solenoids at the back?

Also, i uploaded a pic of that connector that doesn’t seem to have a place to go. Is it normal to be hanging around? Its together with the starter motor loom.

And i need to figure how to reconnect this wire or source another connector. Iv connected it together with wire (hopefully) making contact, for now. It would try to fire with this disconnected wouldn’t it?

I thought that also, however there doesn’t appear to be a connector on the filter to plug it into. Its not underneath where I thought it may be.

Good afternoon

I have taken the cam belt cover off and can confirm the pump pulley is connected and belt looks good. I have taken the injector line off and there is a bit of diesel sitting on top of the injector, but when i turn the engine over there is no fuel coming out of that supply pipe. So I’m guessing there is something is wrong with the fuel pump.

Are there any tests i can do to diagnose further?

A final update before i have to do more research..

The engine fires with easy start.
With the fuel filter removed and turning the engine over, the fuel does indeed pi55 everywhere! Same for when i disconnect the return line.
There is no fuel at all to the injector inline supply, i removed the 17mm nut and no fuel comes out on turning over.
I removed what I believe to be the fuel stop solenoid, at the rear right side of the lucas epic pump, but still no fuel getting to injectors. The rubber part on the end of the plunger looked good and not corroded. Is there supposed to be a spring in there somewhere?
There is no pats led code.
I have squirted wd40 on all electrical connections.
The 3 pin ‘fuel filter?’ connector is still not connected to anything and the filter does not have any connectors to receive it.


So I figure there is something wrong with the fuel pump or still some electronic fault perhaps?

Any thoughts and suggestions are welcome. Im going to further read the epic lucas training manual that i found

My apologies for my self perpetuating thread! Turns out there’s is a whole bunch of us with ‘epic’ troubles!.. i have spent hours looking through posts and it looks increasingly possible that i will end up replacing this pump with a Bosch. I have checked the pump on my other ‘99 non-turbo’d transit and it looks like this.. im not sure if its a 145, theres no model number that i could find…

Would this replace my Lucas epic?

Although i would really like to have an explanation on why the epic is not delivering fuel. I have noticed that the braided return fuel lines from the injectors are perished, so air may have entered the pump. However, I have been turning it over for a while on new batteries and assisted with a battery charger/booster.

An update in case it benefits anyone.. i bought a forscan tool, after clearing the error codes (which i forgot to make a note of the old codes unfortunately), my transit still does not start. No new error codes. So i will use my ‘99 transit as a donor vehicle to attempt to repair this ‘00 model. I will replace the epic pump for the bosch.

PATS code 32 on an EPIC basically means that the ECU and the PATS module are not communicating. Its one of the most common issues with the EPIC and 99% of the time its easily and cheaply solved.

On the inner wing, below the battery is a fuse box. On *most* EPICs there is one fuse and one relay in there - but higher spec ones (e.g. auto/aircon etc) have more (and its trail and error to find out which one you need).

This fuse and relay (its called the power hold relay) is what provides power to the ECU and if either of these are faulty then the ECU doesn't get power and won't communicate with the PATS module - bringing up a code 32. Its a relatively common fault. Replace the fuse and replace the relay as first steps. If this doesn't solve the issue I have seen breaks in the wires below the fuse/relay holder so wiggle the wires to see if that helps (and if so replace the holder).

The other thing I have seen (but only twice) is ECU failure - which is a bit more involved to fix
