if you've checked the bulbs and fuses get underneath and pull the reverse light plug off and bridge it a peice of wire, put the ignition on and if they work it's the switch in the box.
Fuel and temp sounds like either the regulator on the dash or and earth off.
No reverse light on my Mk2 (even though) fitted (S2 lights in a S1) never failed an MOT like it

How can reversing lights fail, when they are not even tested!!

Same with the fuel/temp gauges, in fact even the speedo aint tested.

I've been doing M.O.T's for 8years now, if people have been failed on such things, the tester is doing his job wrong, and should be reported to VOSA

interesting .... i have seen them tested, and always thought if stuff was fitted it should work (reffering mainly to original fit stuff) ... and as for speedo's i asked an mot guy once about it when he was doing tests as he got in the car and drove it in ... seat belts etc, and he said he always checked the speedo when driving in and makes sure the odo works, he never said exactly what he does if they dont, i just assumed he would fail it.

if you look on an mot failure cert, cars and LGV's is speedo N/A class V its testable

I havent been testing (m.O.T) for about ten years but I still get the testers manual and updates, reversing lights has never been part of the test.

Speedos are going to cause some concern over the next year or so though, as the move to computerised tests gets more main stream any vehicle that was 'Computer' tested this year will have had the mileage input, if the speedo were to read the same next year at the M.O.T it will be 'flagged' by the computer and the tester will have to contact VOSA, by my understanding they will then be able to carry out the rest of the test and if said vehicle passes on all other accounts the tester will then have to go out with the owner of the vehicle and make sure the speedo is working, so long as the speedo shows how many Mph/Kph the vehicle is doing then it will be passed and issued with an advisory notice that the 'oddometer' is not counting up the miles, if the speedo does not work then the vehicle will fail.


Back to the matter in hand..... Does the Mk3/4/5 not have a 'multi plug' just behind the bottom of the bulkhead under the floor that goes to the reversing light switch and the tank sender? I'm sure I had to replace one on a camper in the summer...

yes mk3 /4 tranny have a plug near the gearbox for rev lights and fuel sender....2 wires from one plug go to box and 1 wire from a plug goes to sender unit..

MOT today no reverse lights as still can't find fault or work out the wireing
BUT IT WASN'T CHECKED OR NOTED.

Shame about all the other crap found though!!!!!!!!!!!!?

Unlucky mate.
You could always run new wire to the reversing lights and just have switch on the dash for them. That way you can worry people by turning them on at traffic lights!

Yep I think a seperate switch is my only answer, still also got to sort the fuel and temp gauge out aswell so it must be on the same relay as the reverse light ?
Which means there must be a wire loop missing somewhere.

Any one know some decent, honest cheap auto electricians near Manchester?

there is no common connection to the reverse light circiut and the temp/fuel guages.
reverse lights are on a common supply with the brake lights, as your brakelights are working it will be a fault with the reverse light switch or wiring to it

the regulator on the rear of the instrument cluster is a common failure point that affects both the fuel/temp guages

if you do put reverse lights on a separate switch you must have a warning light in the switch or on the dashboard to meet the legal requirments.

Reverse not a problem as was gonna use the switch (which is lit in the cab) for the additional reverse/work lights at the back of the van. But thanks for clearing that up I shall try and re trace the wires from the switch and see if I can short coruit it from within the fuse box.
