Better still to find a mechanic who not only can be trusted but who does a proper job of maintaining your vehicle ,secret is to spot potential problems and rectify .I suppose i am very lucky my mechanic picks up my van using the key he keeps permanently i provide him with a list of jobs i know need to be done using the parts that i mainly scource and are in the van .He completes these jobs and generally knows the van and checks things over as a matter of course he drops van back off and generally charges approx £70 per day absolute maximum of £100 and that would be possibly 9am untill 10pm maybe breaking off to do other odd jobs for his other customers .I feel doubly fortunate in that my mechanic is not just a bolt off bolt on merchant he actually strips things down and repairs often manufacturing things in the process.

£70 a day? Are you having me on? £100 for an 11 hour day? Even a friend who's a mobile mechanic with no premises to rent charges around £35 an hour.

That does sound ridiculously cheap! (or reasonable whichever way you look at it)

I know sometimes you get mates rates and such...... i suppose it depends what he actually gets done for you during the day.

All i can say is - Sounds like you got a gud'un! so can we have his number!!!!

When my van got Mot'd the mechanic told me the prop bearings were shot. It passed the MOT without them being repaired, and I did them the following week
Still hasn't completely cured the juddering at take off

then your techs should be beaten
as said it is not a mot item so would not have been tested but should allways be checked in a service if the mechanic knows transits then he would of checked it , if he doesnt then he should not be servicing them

Being realistic mechanic probably does 5hrs solely on my van as he does a bit of chasing around for parts and dropping his misses of at work and picking her up again plus the odd caller "can you just have a look at this for me" But i do know i get a very good deal ,I also have a Transit breaker near me who provides parts at amazing prices - Like new tyres 225s £20 Just as new front coil spring from memory £10 new centre runner on side load door £10 and unbelievably when i mentioned last wheel was scruffy he rubbed it down and sprayed it silver ,i dont just get as new tyre it comes on wheel also.

Its another case of vosa in the field not agreeing with the mot test

same as rear lights showing white/reversing light stuck on will not fail an mot. only the numer plate plate lights showing white to the rear is a failer.

and before any mot tester argues. please look up in your testers manual and show where it says anything other than a number plate light showing white to the rear is a failure.

but plod will pull you if your reversing lights are stuck on.

I charge £100 to £130 a day depending on where i am working, but that is about what everybody charges around me for an 8 hour day carpentry

i think this manual needs revising for the honest people (the goverment could have saved millions and still got scrap cars off the road)who actually prefer there vehicle to be safe and not just legal

trouble with vosa is half of them cant fix a vehicle if they had to, they only know what the book/ laptop/course/ other, tells them and follow it to the letter!! the old skoolers (proper ministry men) would know whats good and whats not from experience and were good to deal with, not like these dramatic, padantic college idiots we have know! i had one look at a tacho of mine and i sat there biting my lip as he pretended he knew what he was looking at as he looked at the back of the chart!!! trouble now with vosa is its all about the money!! thats why they give out prohibitions like confetti! dosh dosh dosh!!!!!

as for plg mot,s most cars/vans dont get properly serviced/ inspected from one year to another so they are only good for a month maybe, whereas larger hgv/psv have to undergo six weekly inspections so problems do get spotted and sorted. end of rant

if it was advised its worth doing after mot in my eyes

lucky it passed my one has just failed on loads

if it had been reported as exessive play on mot advisory i would have without a doubt replaced it
however when i asked if there was anything needing further attention was told no had been extra strict on it cause i carry wife and kids

should have known better not the first f*@k up thats came out of there on my vehicles

Have you tried Halltune in St. Boswells? They have always been good with my motors

Have you tried Halltune in St. Boswells? They have always been good with my motors

do you work there i know halltune my work sometimes sends stuff there for mot

No I don't work at Halltune, but I have taken my vehicles there for work and MOT's since 1990 and have always had good treatment. Kenny Hall knows what he is doing

just went to pick up my van at the garage were it been getting repaired and told "cant fit prop centre bearing as universal joint is goosed" getting so peed off now just want my van back at my door
so i asked main dealer how much for the uj this will make you laugh
got told sorry we cant supply that part
take it to border engines at berwick and have it reconed
if the garage had started the job when it was origanally booked in i could have had it back by now
getting so fed up with garages taking the p*^s
WILL DEFENATELY GIVE HALLTUNE A TRY NEXT TIME MY PRIDE AND JOY REQUIRES WORK
