See, you learn somethink new everyday.

I dont think I would notice the difference in noise that much as I can barely hear myself think anyway, it is a Mk5!

I have found some Kingpin Tracker MT's for £42 a tyre, so since I know they would fit the back axle ok then I might order 4 and leave the fronts for now.

Thanks for your help.

Could be nonsense but is it the lack of weight in the back of your tipper giving you no traction?
I can get out out of most things as most of the weight of my van (apart from the engine of course) is over the driving wheels.
Trying taking some lumps of ballast with you before you spend a tonne of money.

It doesnt help that much mate, once the couple of mm of tread on the road tyres have mud in them its all over.

Plus if I was to carry a tote bag of building sand around on the back for extra traction, then it wouldnt give me much space to put anything.

I think that £168 for 4 "proper job" mud tyres for the back axle will save me money with time not lost with a stuck van.

Keeping road tyres on the front will be better for braking and steering aswell I would of thought.

235 tyres run at lower pressure than 185 which are really only 160mm wide.

d,ont waste cash on tyres ,just fit a winch on the front.if you get stuck in the middle of a field ,hammer something into the ground and winch of that.a winch can be used for loads of other things.ex;pulling down trees.other than a lsd if uyou can find one emergency vehicles had some fitted.

I already have a small portable winch and use that for jobs so I know how handy they are, but for the cost of a decent winch and all the work involved in mounting one to my van would far exceed the cost of those tyres.

I don't think it's a case of tyres, you need some weight on the back axle, I live on a hill and empty around my yard my van is useless.

Hi guys, totally new here & don`t owna transit at mo but will be looking for one soon.
Just a thought but have you tried the handbrake method. If you have one wheel that loses traction you let it spin at a slowish rate & slowly apply the handbrake. The friction of the brake replaces the friction of the tyre on that wheel & the torque is sent to the tyre with the grip. Obviously this only works when the handbrake actuates on the drive axle. On four wheel drives the same effect can be achieve with the footbrake but is much harder.
Where I used to work there was a old driver who so say knew it all. He took one of the tranny minibuses out & parked with one wheel on a muddy verge & got it stuck. Boss sent me out & with him saying "you won`t get it out you need to tow it" I drove it straight away. How satisfying.

Did it work for you then? It`s a brilliant little trick & you will impress people with it so much.
I told a mate about it some years ago & when I spoke to him again he called me a few choice names. When I asked him what was wrong he told me he tried my trick one night two miles from home in a thunder storm whilst it was pissing down. He got his front wheel drive escort (rear handbrake) stuck fast & had to walk home.
Some people have no hope. I didn`t stop laughing for weeks.
