Which axle do I have?!

Nice one - it is a "J". Been looking at the other axle threads and mine is a round casing one.

Guess I'll phone up my local van scrappy and ask if they have one that matches those characteristics. Local garage said he could do it for me easy enough.

Not too bothered about the speedo - it jumps about 5mph either side of the actual speed reading at random anyway, so not really that accurate!

Yeah, displays all the symptoms of being cable driven.

So, I'm looking for a "J" 5.14:1, round casing 6-stud axle - I think! Any advances on that ?!

Ideally yes - the 4.63:1 would be good, but more important that I get one that fits! Phoned a local van scrappy and he said they have them in for £125 + Theft. Sounds a bit pricey to me, will see if he'll do a deal for cash

What you probably have is a 5.14:1 or a very very slow 5.83:1 and what you'd like is a 4.63:1

Check out your ID panel in the passenger footwell on the right hand side of this panel, count down three rows and the fifth box across will be the axle ratio code letter and as long as no one has changed it since factory it will be correct
If it says 'K'= 5.83:1
If it says 'J' = 5.14:1
If it says 'G'= 4.63:1 (that's the one to go for when looking in the breakers )

Try and also get the speed sensor off the gearbox if you find this axle as your speedo will be out otherwise

Going by the numbers and letters my axle is none of these and looking at how the letters seem to relate to the ratio then I should be lucky to do 50mph down a hill and it is just a little bit quicker than that. So what is the full list of letters to axle ratio

Ok well that makes no sense then...but it is Fords...look at the letters and you would think with the previous list that they would get a lot worse with the letter difference...I have the L axle so not too bad overall then

Is yours a smiley 6 stud Because that's what this thread was for
If you have a five stud then obviously there's more

Guy 88 has got the rest listed and there is another one, but I think it might be pre-smiley;
5 STUD 'X' = 3.9:1

Is that over a ton by a Ford speedo of using GPS?

That was gps. It was 110 on the ford speedo.
Laser cameras dont pick you up at that speed

The fuel guage was broke at the time so it always said full. now thats economy
