I have just been fined for driving my Transit mk7 in Bath emission zone , £60 fine plus £9 quid charge , to qualify for a lower emission charge you will have to tell dvla and try to get your vehicle reregistered , I asked about changing the emissions on a fiesta diesel turbo once to bring it up to new emission spec and was told by dvla that car was what it was and it would be taxed at its original emissions level regardless :|

I didn't even know that Bath had one, seems it's only been in place a short while, and they call it a clean air zone.

Strangely, although it seems that vans less than Euro 6, are chargeable, LGV's are free, which is what I thought was a commercial van under 3500kg :?
Diesel cars are also free

A week ago I bought a 1988 Ex-BBC Radio Norfolk Broadcast Mk3 Transit with a 2.0L Pinto and given that I plan to do the occasional towing of my Morris to events etc. it makes logical sense for me to swap to a 2.5DI.
However... given my relative proximity to London and some of the London-based events that I'd like to go to (eg. HCVS London to Brighton run) I am hoping to grin and bear the fuel bill of the Pinto if it means saving £100 a day to enter Greater London.
Luckily, the 40 year rolling historic vehicle tax/LEZ/ULEZ exemption is only 4 years away under the current rules so hopefully it won't be too long until I can swap over to a 2.5DI :D
As for the English CAZ zones outside of London, I get a "Vehicle details are incomplete" when checking eligibility as it can't recognise the type of vehicle - perhaps something to do with it being a "special mobile unit" body type confusing the system? :o
It is also worth mentioning that Scotland now has its own LEZ areas in its cities since this thread was first created however they have a more generous 30 year rolling historic vehicle exemption as opposed to the standard 40 years :D

This thread was originally about the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ) which came into force in 2012, and only affected diesel vans below Euro3. I know this because I had to get rid of two Euro 2 vans, and buy a Euro 3 Mk6 so that I could continue to work in the London area.
Many diesel van owners had them converted to petrol engines which didn't come under LEZ emission rules. Cars of either fuel were unaffected.
The LEZ still exists, but in a much smaller area in inner London, so has been partly replaced with the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) which has different rules; ALL cars and vans; diesels with emissions of less than Euro 6, and petrols with emissions of less than Euro 4 have to pay £12.50 per day to drive in the ULEZ zone, plus more if you drive in as far as the LEZ, and your vehicle is not ULEZ or LEZ compliant.

Yes, I have checked the Tfl ULEZ page and it comes up as ULEZ chargeable but LEZ exempt however I am hoping with my fingers crossed to be ULEZ exempt come April 2029 with historic exemption anyway :)
It is just the Scottish LEZ and English CAZ checkers which seem to get confused with my van's registration :o

I thought the LEZ was, and still is today in force for all 32 London Boroughs:

i got a letter through about my amby saying the LEZ now extends to the ULEZ boundry and ULEZ is no longer in force for HGV, only LEZ, so i'd only have to pay £100 a day (lez charge) instead of £150 (ulez charge) , nice of them
so LEZ and ULEZ now cover the exact same area but are still seperate, i have no f*** clue what they are on at TFL but i want some of it

Ah, good info Rob, I thought that the original LEZ had retreated further into London for some reason!

There's no doubt in my mind that the confusion is all about trapping unsuspecting drivers, especially those from outside London, many of whom have no idea about these rules and charges, until the fine hits the doormat

The ULEZ was originally a much smaller area, but is now almost everything inside M25 - the same boundary as the LEZ
