MK 3 Heater resistor

Which wire should be the earth.

How come my resistor only has 2 terminals i would have thought as there are 2 slower speeds it should have 1 in and 2 out for the speeds.

every van i went to in the breakers was the same

im sure mine has 3 terminals The body of the resistor is the earth.

All the ones I've doen have had 3 terminals, maybe you have found the resistor for the lights!

Ok.....just had a look at mine and yes it does indeed have 3 wires. There are actually 4 connections. 3 on one side and 1 on another. The single connection on mine is not connected to anything. What i did notice and why i dont know, mine is floating in mid air That means that its not earthed.......so maybe doesnt need an earth. Thinking about it, it shouldnt have an earth, the earth will only come into play at the end of the circuit ie the motor. Hope this helps

definatly behind O/S headlight and onlt 2 terminals.
been driving without it connected for a week and everything still works no earth in sight for it

The chassis of it is the earth.

the three connections should be in a single terminal block, the spades were rusted mine so i cut it off and connected them seperately, just make sure you get the wires on the correct terminal

mine has no earth and it still works

found the rite bit now it is under the N/S (L/H) headlamp , 3 terminals. still no earth

What is the resistor under the O/S (R/H) headlight then

when do you need this resistor then??? ( nothing in wiring diagram that i can see)

also reading haynes waht is the difference between high level instumentation and low level instrumentation

Dont know about the haynes manual but the other resistor (o/s) is the 'dim-dip', this makes the headlight bulbs come on very weakly when you put your side lights on.

If thats what it is id doesnt appear to be working as i only get sidelights come on. Non eof this is mentioned in haynes

there is a wiring diagram on page WD5 at the back of the Haynes showing the resistor but it wont tell you where to find it. Page WD2 and WD3 are the lighting wiring diagrams and it shows no resistors at all?
Must say i have never seen the resistor that is pictured in this thread so i'm a bit puzzled by it?

I had a wander around all the different vans in the breakers and it is only there on MK3 vans.

also noticed that on the MK4's the heator resistor is on the right and MK3's are on the left
