hi
bit worried about the comments about undoing and re-tightening the "fuel nut " if its the nut in the centre of the injection pump then you aint ever going to get a run out of it, its not keyed on and is set in the factory
it was like that before i touched it !!

ok so, i had another bash today, removed the belt and started again, put the tension on the belt first then tightened the fuel nuts, thanks mr. puk, took the pins out gave it a turn and located all 3 fine! put everything back on. gave it a turn from the key, it sounded better but never caught before the batt. started to weaken. i'm thinking of bumping it. any issues i should be aware of before trying it. i confident the timing is ok, pretty sure the rocker clearance is there or v. close and everything is bolted back on. so safe to bump?

If you have rotated the engine by trying to start it then it should be OK to tow start

ok so, finally got round to trying to start my van, i got a jump from a recovery truck instead of towing it but still no joy, it wouldn't fire. turning over, sounding ok. nothing but some melted plastic on the terminal. so i stripped it back to check the timing. all pins are locating fine. so what would be my next check to try and get this van moving. between work and my gal due any time soon  i need to get the van back mobile asap.

hey all, ok i went out this morn to check the valve clearances as that's the last thing that i tampered with, which are now fine, whilst cranking it round i noticed that it was between 4&7 and 5&8 that the 3 cogs line up for the pins. i assume there's a correlation between them all and it may sound daft but i thought i best ask if that's what it should be? as i'm stumped for where to look now to get the van running.

Are you absolutely certain that you used the correct pins in the correct holes for the timing? For example, what size did you use in the flywheel hole and was it the proper pin, or a drill?
There is a second, smaller hole in the flywheel which can set the timing 180 degrees out :?

i used drill bits 13mm,9mm,8mm. i guess i can't be absolutely certain, it's my 1st attempt and it's not starting  i followed the instructions on w.goose's how to. locked the 13mm in, located the 9mm at about 11o'clock and the 8mm at about 7o'clock.

i was just thinking to myself that since i had to manually turn each cog into position. could i have advanced a wheel further than the others, say i locked the 13mm then had to half turn the 9mm to get it in place and missed the 8mm 1st time so advanced another turn to lock it. would this throw the timing out? as it's more than likely something my hands have done.
if so how would i set it up correctly?

im no tranny expert but it sounds to me like you have got the crank 180 degrees out , id pull it down leaving your cam and fuel pump pinned and rotate your crank shaft 180 degrees and re build as previous
keep it real

Not possible if he had the pin in correctly.

thanks for the replies, my new plan is: lock the 13mm after 1 full turn, if it does, then advance the other 2 cogs, which should be halfway round, to the pin position. i may have originally locked the 13mm midway thro the 2 turns, then advanced the other 2 from halfway round to pinning position. 2 full turns of the bottom to advance the others 1 turn. i don't even know if that makes sense but i'm having a coffe the noo, so if it's just plain madness then let me know. or wait for an hour till i've done it then post that it's daft.

couldn't convince my self that the steps earlier would help any so left it. all 3 line up and do so after a couple of turns. that's what it should be doing i guess. i'm going to charge the battery overnight. all thats changed from when the recovery van tried to jump it is the valve clearances correctly set and the fuel pump nuts tightened after the tension was put back on the belt. i'll find out tommorow if it's made any difference.

apart from the pin not going in to the timing hole ( assuming he got the timing hole and not a balance drilling ) 180 * out i th pistons in the same place as 0*

:? 180° out on the crank would mean the pistons are half a rotation out.
