so, could i clear something up with this 180deg out, timing and me confusing myself with extra turns and such. if all the pins line up and do so after 2 rotations. then the timing should be ok? or is there an outcome that would leave all the pins lining up after turning but the timing out?

just a quick update. i saw the full charge light had come on so i nipped out to see what would happen. A weak limp turn then the sound of quiet machine gun fire, dunno how best to decribe it. starter?

I don't know the technical term for the sound (contacts on the starter relay or solenoid closing?) but thats the noise you get when the battery hasn't got enough juice.

For what its worth...
I'm sorry to hear you are having such a nightmare with this, I tried to make the guide as straightforward as possible, but of course it has the omission of the new style tensioner (that I have never used) the one in the diagrams posted above and the one you are using I assume, and the method of operating it is different.

As to the timing...
From what I remember when I was playing with the clutch and flywheel, there is only one hole big enough to accept the timing pin (oo-err), there are other holes of smaller diameter, so if you are using the correct pin size and its installed fully, then the timing is correct.

Here is a very bad pic of my flywheel http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd19 ... ywheel.jpg Timing hole bottom right.

ok, back on the charger for the batt. it was at 12.6v. too low to do anything?

yer guide is spot on, very clear and concise. it is the old style tensioner on it, pennies are tight so i thought i'd save on that. i repeated the steps from yer guide. set tensioner back, fit belt, undo tensioner nut to allow it to tighten up to the belt.

yep all bits/pins correct size and def. going fully in no way of mistaking it. so i'll take the timing as ok.

just to let all you good folk know, the van breathes again!!woohoo!!
overnight charge on the battery, the adjustment with the fuel nuts, thank you again mr.puk, and being more accurate about the valve clearances have done the job. it's been covered in a foot of snow for the past few days but with the batt. charged it kick in after a couple of beats. don't think it's ever started that quickly, even in the warm weather.
thanks to everybody who chipped in and the regulars who keep the site going. i normally only appear when there's trouble and it's my first port of call for the required info. great site. since i'm buzzing about the van getting back on the road, is there a donate button, the help i've had from here has served my well since i joined.
