Hi mate,
Having done a few of these conversions for customers, I can say that none have reported any significant increase in fuel costs, petrol is cheaper than derv now!
Provided you are sensible with the way you drive the van, I doubt that the fuel costs will increase much.
As regards the cost of the conversion, it really depends how lucky you are with sourcing the pre-used parts that are needed and how many new parts you wish to have installed when the conversion is carried out.
The first conversion we carried out for a customer was done using many new parts, at the customer's request, to achieve maximum reliability. The engine had all new gaskets and seals and was fitted with a new alternator, starter motor and clutch together with new service parts at time of installation.
The simplest solution is to source an engine from a Mk3 Transit together with all the ancillaries as this will provide most of the parts needed to install the engine into your Mk5, however, many of the pre-used engines being sold are old and worn so my advice would be to find a good engine, or have one re-built, and then purchase the necessary ancillaries to install it in your van. The only other consideration is the power steering pump bracket, as you have no doubt seen in the thread, we manufacture these to enable the existing 2.5di pump to be mounted onto the pinto engine, but we have found that these secure better to the later pinto engines, 202/205 block, as the mounting points that we utilise are more robust.
We still have many of the conversion parts, including engines, in stock to assist forum members with their conversions.
Please feel free to contact the office on the number below for advice or any assistance you may require.

Hi there, the process for changing your V5 details with dvla is surprisingly simple yet somewhat 'long winded'
The new details, engine number, cubic capacity and fuel type need to be amended. Fill in the relevant parts of your V5 and return to dvla Swansea but keep a photocopy and a note of the date you posted the document, just in case :!: .
You will receive a letter back, complete with an envelope addressed to a specific department that seeks to confirm your alterations, they do not trust you!
This return letter will ask for some supporting evidence of your conversion, unfortunately a new mot certificate will not suffice as the fuel type is no longer recorded on the mot certificate :?:
The simplest solution is to return this with a supporting letter in the addressed envelope from the garage that carried out the conversion, or a local garage that is willing to confirm the details of your conversion.
Do not be tempted to include the supporting letter in the original application with your amended V5 as it will be ignored. Dvla state that amended V5's that are sent to them should not include any other paperwork in the envelope as, and we have found this to be correct, all other correspondence found in the envelope with the V5 will be disposed of, or at least ignored!
When you send the second application, together with your supporting letter, it will be in the addressed envelope supplied by return of post and reach the correct department and be processed accordingly.
Once you have received your amended V5, you will be able to contact tfl and send them, also to the correct department, a COPY of your amended V5 and a copy of your supporting letter from the garage, to ensure that they amend their records.
Hope this helps all of you to get compliant!

The first two are letters and relate to the date of the engine :!:
