the problem is this the rev counter is only multiplying by 100 not by a 1000
so on tickover it is reading 7000 instead of 700
but the needle is reving with the engine

any ideas please peeps

thank you tony

ps my dash is an electronic speedo
with the late type alternator with the plug on the side
I was on this site yesterday but didn't get anything come thruough 'til now  I don't understand your rev. readings :? x100=70rpm :?: is the clock all the way round at 7000rpm @ idle. also did you note what year your mondie clocks are from :?: there are several different ones and a TIS disc can help here. You may have to modify the earthing circuit for the rev counter to work properly :( If you don't have a TIS disc I could try and help :)

Yes it is but Nighthawks information appears to relate to the Smiley version, well at least how I read it was and that thread was about a 2000 model Transit, so by that token you could argue that Nighthawk was talking about the wrong model in the thread I linked to ;)

The post you linked to, Nighthawk was talking about a Mk6.

Sure the thread was about a MK6 but read this reply by Nighthawk again and you will see he is referencing the older version...which HAS to be the Smiley

Nighthawk wrote:The dash on yours is the electronic item and the wiring harness isn't that easy to get at and the connector is a small affair.

The speed signal to the dash is sent from the engine management module, it is possible to find the wiring where it comes back through the bulkhead into the cab area.

There used to be a grey plug below the central junction box with a jumper wire in, that was where the tachograph option took it's feed from, not sure if it was left there on later vehicles though.

Once you know the signal from the Vss you can trace the cable back and go from there.

I think you might find he is talking about an early Mk6, either way he is talking about a speed signal not engine revs.

right here goes i wired up correctly, but 92 - 95 models had a diode between the alternator and rev count 95 onwards models did not this is from the haynes manual.
so ... does any know where this diode can be found on the engine and to which type of alternator this refers
just so i can rule this out

I thought the diode was attached to the back of the instrument cluster?

RIGHT :!: As everything else is working in your instrument cluster as you would like...........
1) Check you have 12volts to your rev. counter.
2) Check you have your cable from the alternator to rev. counter.(obviously you have)
3) Check you have a proper earth to the rev. counter.
4) With this data, your rev. counter should work properly. It only requires these three cables. Supply.Pulse.Earth. Nothing more.
You can even remove the clock and hard wire it direct just to try. When removed you can see the labelling next to each pin.
Good luck :!: Hope this helps :D

Just a thought... :D

I thought there might be a mondeo owners forum ...but will they actually know the answer as the item is meant to fit in the vehicle they are fans of, afterall they are very unlikely to be fitting a single dial Transit unit to their st24 or whatever, unless you mean the part I want identification of?

Since it is an old style message board I have posted up the question...if it gets an answer we shall see... http://www.fordmondeoownersclub.co.uk/f ... p?mid=2885

Another update...since the diode is now being talked about. The posting of the question on the Mondeo owners club proved as I thought it would be.... a waste of time...still no answer so obviously no-one there knows or actually has any clue when it comes to swapping parts around. But in their defense they are more concerned with switching trim parts around and things breaking/repairing rather than what is in effect is customisation.

The diode 'might' be this part I asked about before...especially since it isn't present on my cluster (still for sale/swap peeps ;) ) Which tends to suggest that the diode on a Mondeo is elsewhere.
Here is the picture of 100ps's cluster with the 'diode'?? pointed at.

i have seen the labeled pin and the rev counter is working just x100 not x1000

Have you actually read this thread?

I have the same as you except I don't have the part pointed at...plus all the extra stuff lamp wise I listed before.

It is a cable driven cluster from a TD Mk 1 Mondeo (1995)...I did some searching around for build years and sort of decided this was a Mk 1 if it isn't well Mk 2 then.
Nice low milage as well ;) shame since the milage is basically what my engine has done...chassis obviously more but isn't showing it in all the usual spots and underneath is very clean. Rambling now but info as requested.

Sorry mate rev counters are on smileys  that's late 94 onwards.
I'm trying to crack this for you but it's difficult with the different versions of the same thing :x
Can you tell me if your mondie clocks have seat belt reminder or anything:?:
