Veg Oil

Having read so much about using veg oil I am now considering using it myself, my mk5 has a bosch pump so I`m alright on that score, and I think using 40% derv and 60% oil should be fine, I also am aware that more fuel filter changes will be needed having read and taken on board what other users have made comment about on this forum (great info) my question is this, does new veg oil require filtering before going into the tank, or does it go straight in from the bottle, so to speak, Steve

pull up in asdas ect empty put 40ltrs in straight from bottle top up with derv and on ure way out recicle bottles :wink:

That easy, great, I have a few wholesale outlets down here so I`ll check out their bulk prices, I`m assuming, having read many other comments, that wvo needs a bit more prep work, but I`ll re-read past posts to make sure, thanks, Steve

i just tip it in my tank usualy ktc veg oil no problems at all winter or summer.never used waste oil as the animal fats in it (lard) will block my filters.2.5di bananna 1999 swb tourneo. 8) 8)

Popped into local whole sale place (Hyparama peterborough) and found some Veg oil at £18.59 for 20ltrs...put spotted it said soya on label.

Couldn't for the life of me remember what had been said about soya but remember reading something so didn't buy any...went to tesco and got 10ltrs of sunflower oil for £10,good but not as cheap as Hyparama.

Just stuck the 10ltrs of sunflower in...how quickly do you on average need to be looking at changing filter,is it like a couple of days..weeks,i know everyone will be different..just wondering how quick the filter will be getting blocked.

every one is different when i did it it didnt block my filter at all and i drove around with my filter under my seat for months i use tesco sunflower oil at 100 per cent i havent bought a drop of diesel for 5 months now and i do approx 30000 miles a year so i have driven a long distance on sunflower oil but i would change fuel fuel filter yearly anyway as a blocked filter just draines your power and vehicle feels flat mine literally flies turn pump up 1.5 turns use sunflower oil and feel the differance try some 2 stroke oil as well and you can definatally hear the differance as well and change engine oil regularly and it will run forever

So, is soya oil alright to use ?? and what about rape seed oil, what I`m saying is this, what can we use in a Di, and what should we not use( and the reason for not using a particular oil) I just think that it needs clarifying so that there is no chance of fu**ing the injector pump up, I know this has probably been covered before, but I see no harm in a refresher just in case some folk have missed the point, like myself :oops:

Needs to be a sticky in my opinion...im sure the requlars geet fed up seeing the same question posted over and over...just like im sure i did,and despite using search i was still unsure.

pretty new to this veg oil mullarky myself so hopefully looking forward to some insightful info regarding the mk5 with bosch.

my take on it is that there are 5 main groups that apply,

1: Bio diesel at the pumps, not seen any locally so not an option for me.

2: wvo ( waste veg oil ) cheaper if youv'e got a supplier but needs filtering etc & need to make sure no fats or water present. Gettin rid of the sludge after doesn't sound that pleasant either.

The svo's ( straight veg oil )
3: rapeseed oil -- seems to be the lightest of the veg oils so probably best suited for running all year with least thinning required, more expensive generally & i have read ( take with pinch of salt ) that it's slightly less efficient.

4: sunflower oil -- slightly thicker than rapeseed needs some thinning in colder months & reasonably priced ( especially when the missus works for tesco 89p/l at the mo )

5: soy based-- ktc brand seems to be the most commonly used & is the heavier of the 3 svo's mentioned , from what i've read it's fine for summer use but will need thinning in winter to avoid clogging up.


It appears to be a trial & error thing for working out what's best for each vehicle , some will work happily on 100% veg while a similar one struggles, presumably this is wear relating to indvidual engine components.
Start with a weaker veg oil to diesel mix & work your way up til the vehicle tells you it doesn't like it.

As for fuel filter changes , this depends on what crap the tank has in it before you start , the veg oil will carry more particles to the filter so a change after 2-3 hundred miles wouldn't be a bad place to start & it would give an idea of what's happening but be prepared & always carry a spare just in case.I believe there is also a coking issue with all the veg oil options with the soy being the worst so more frequent engine oil changes are required.

A 2 tank system would be nice Though that may be something for the future.
