Heater Blower not working but not usual problem

Hi, hope someone can help!

My transit heater blower has stopped working. It doesn't work on any speed but does seem like it is blowing very faintly a bit of warm ait.

I have searched the forum for answers but cannot find the answer.

I have searched for the resistor pack but cannot find it. I was informed it would be near the drivers headlight but its not, as I can see. Its not near the passengers either. I have removed both batteries and still cannot find it.

Q. How can I wire 12v direct to test blower motor, their are two plugs going to the motor so which one is it? I have tested and get 12v to the top plug with two wires.

Q. Where else would I look for the resistor pack and can I bypass in anyway to eliminate the switch or resistor pack?

Hope theirs someone who can help.

I have a 2000 mk5 transit used to be an RAC van with a banana turbo engine if that makes a difference!

On your year of van the heater resistor is in the top of the heater box inside the van not by the headlight. Bit of a mare to get to. Held in with 2 torx screws. On the right hand side.

I removed the piece of black trim that houses the radio to get to mine.

I did remove the radio and the ash tray etc so you can get a good view of the box but I didn't see any resistor pack don't suppose anyone has a picture of this do they, a bit baffled now, I have to say though I was looking at the blower box, is this the same as the heater box?

With my problem would is it likely to be the resistor pack?

How would I directly connect 12v to the fan to check the motor as their are two blocks running to the motor and one has a 12v feed present.

Perfect just what I was looking for, I appreciate your time, not that I have found the resistor yet though... Bit dark now but will be going for it tomorrow morning. I am sure with this knowledge though I will have it in my hands very soon.

Hope that changing this will be the end of this problem..... Will let you know.

hi mines a 1999 swb with a bananna.take the radio out then take the whole front trim off with the ashtray clock and cup holder in it .it pulls off when u remove the screw behind the trim thats around the speedo .the resistor is fixed in the side of fan blower box its got 3 wires to it i think and the fan motors got 2 wires to it .good luck

Cheers, will let you know, think I seen the wire your talking about didn't know it was the resistor though, will be operating tomorrow.....

It should still work on full speed, even with a dodgy resistor pack, so you may have another problem as well

You should have full speed without the resistor anyway, probably the fan motor

You shouldnt turn the fan on with the resistor out for too long... the thermalfuse will blow after a short time. Although a thermalfuse only costs 82p.

Just a reminder that I have experienced problems with the fuse board "upstream" busbar that affected my heater fan operation. Especially if you can smell hot plastic, have a look at this:

Ok so here is the update....

1st thing, thanks for all your input!

I did as said above and took the front panel off.
Accessed the resistor pack from the side head on clutch look up and take two torx screws out, made it easier with front dash out as let some light through, not too bad just fiddly.

Anyway I checked as before and their was 12v at the fan so thought it would be the blower motor. I removed the blower motor and got another one, plugged it in and the replacement didn't work even though their was 12v at the terminal.

I hot wired the fan ( should of done this 1st ) Fan worked so now confusion has kicked in.

Decided that maybe the resistor pack is giving way under load so that's why it has 12v at terminal but breaks down when blower is connected?

Took fan back and exchanged for a resistor pack that he said was working, he made the effort to check why I waited so have no reason to disbelieve him.

Put it all together and still nothing. I then looked at the loom. It appears that it has been bypassed in the past so I ran a negative feed to the wire that had been spliced and the fan kicked in on full blast, a bit of progress. So the wire that was splice I have cut and took a earth feed to the wire and it will ony work on full speed. I am not too sure on how it should be wired to be back to origanal so maybe this is now my problem.

Any one got a picture of the wires from the switch, heater resistor and fan so I can trace the wires. Their seems to be no colour coordintatin from the resistor terminal to the switch which was spliced into.

A bit confused now.

Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

It's beginning to sound like the fuse board problem.
To check, identify the live feed from the fuse board to the heater switch; disconnect it somehow and substitute a feed straight from the battery +ve terminal with an in-line 25a fuse; if everything now works as it should, it will be the actual seat for the fuse in the main fuse board. Happened a couple of times to me.

Looked at the Haynes for you - wiring from 95 models on

Black -> motor (Earth)
30A fuse -> Vt/Bk -> switch pin4 (12V supply)
switch pin 3 -> Vt/Ye -> resistor pin 3 (slow speed)
switch pin 1 -> Vt/Bu -> resistor pin 1 (half speed)
switch pin2 -> Wh/Bk -> motor (full speed) also spliced to Wh/Gn -> resistor pin 2

(also to switch: Og/Gn and Bk for illumination)

Appreciate that, especially the wiring part, will be at garage this morning so will check wiring and as stated will run a direct line and see what happens, will post back result this evening....
