How to remove the rear floor panel mk5 swb

Postby vanmanloki » Sat Mar 23, 2013 7:35 am

Ok folks I got one for you, how to remove the rear floor panel in my mk5 swb. I'm replacing the rear floor with a new panel,
Is it spot welded in as well as sealed in?

Mostly spot welded all along the chassis rails and out riggers you might find a seam weld along the wheel arches an 8mm spot weld drill bit will do you.

For the amount of spots you'll have to drill out, your gonna need a few spot drills  you'll have to cut some space to get to the flanges

i know :? on one hand i'm worried about what i'm gonna find, but on the other glad i'm going to have the chance to fix it all. and maybe give the van another 9 lives

i suppose the best way to clean all the chassis rails once floor is off would be having it shot blasted, then repair any damage areas and then zinc coat it?
but failing that would a grinder with a good wire brush attachment be the next best thing?

Busy doin one now :!: if your floor was bad in the rear corners then you'll probably find that the outriggers underneath that area will be shot and then the spring hangers might need a bit of work too :!: on the main chassis rails, the worst bits will be the area around the bump stop directly above the axle the rot forms between the rail and the reinforcement fitted inside at that point, this one seemed solid though a bit rough looking so i hit it harder with the hammer and it came away  so this is being cut out and replaced with a good section from another van (the section a bit further forward of the problem always seems to be in much better nick) its not exactly the same shape as above the axle the chassis rail narrows slightly but as i'm raising the height of the van anyway by making deeper rear spring hangers it wont matter too much :!: also had to fabricate new lower panel inners (hope that makes sense) the bit behind the bottom of wheel arch and rear crossmember inner panel (again i'm using the outer from another van cut out big and trim off surplus to be left with nice panel had it blasted and primed, now ready to refit :!: should look good when its finshed and will last for years :D :D
