2.5di in a mk7???

Postby lancy » Fri Sep 13, 2013 11:05 pm

Hello there, my trusty old 190 xlwb has come to end of is time :(
and who I work for have asked me to get a fresher van but I not too keen on the problem s associated with them, seems to me u always need to have at least a grand spare incase of problems unless ur one of the lucky ones.
I no a di has bn put in a mk6 before and this is what I had in mind but was wondering is it possible to put one in the mk7??
I no thers issues with getting speedo working on mk6 but would it be easier to get it working on the mk7 as I gather its taken from abs unit?? also wondering if possible to fit the cable drive shifter to the old box??

Sorry to go on :? hope I bn clear enough and u can make sense of it lol.
many thanks sean

I have a di and love it. But I wonder when your have to call it a day on the di's? Maybe in ten years we will be looking on the mk7 as a good motor!

It would take too much rewiring I would think. MK 7 has the dreaded BCM module that nearly everything goes to, plus the speedo, ecu, and fuel pump are all coded to this. Simple things like airbag light, abs light, and central locking won't work without this infrastructure in place.

Even the load sensing valve for braking is now an electronic algorithm that is part of the abs esp system.
If you gutted the whole van and went basic it would still fail an mot without the airbag light or a catalytic converter ect.

There's nothing wrong with a TDCI that £2000 can't fix

It may be that the non engine systems will still work with all the engine wiring unplugged, in which case it should be relatively easy. You would have to fit the Di speedo though.

I suppose the easiest way to find out would be to unplug all the engine wiring from a Mk7, then tow it down the road with ignition switched on and see what works and what doesn't.

I own a smiley recovery truck and also occasionally usea friends 140ps mk7 recovery truck

My smiley has a turbo and manual fuel pump wound up so it pulls pretty well, The mk7 has good torque too but i find it has a very narrow powerband and only moves when its on boost.

I prefer my smiley for reliability and just driving town to town but the mk7 is by far more comfortable on the motorway with 6 gears you can cruise at 90.

If I just did motorway driving i think i would go for a mk7 but as most of my jobs are local I'll stick with my old faithful di
