Postby ellabbs » Mon Jul 28, 2014 4:35 pm

hiya theres a white steel cover surrounding my steering lock assembly on my mk5 transit van... with no visible bolts or anything

i can not see how to remove it...

it is really rigid and more like a reinforced protection cover..

does anyone know how to remove it ..?

I think they are called killshields or killtech lock shields - but can't remember exactly.

They were a factory (and aftermarket) option, and were installed using shear bolts - so there is nothing to grab on to to remove it.

Angle grinder time... (cover the windows!!!)

Exactly right Matt, I had one fitted to my Mk4 and had to have it removed when the ignition switch failed. The guy who removed it used a very small blowtorch to melt the epoxy resin which was covering the fixing bolts, and then simply unbolted it :!: :D

As above of if its had ball bearings hammered into the allen bolts chisel them, worst case take steering columm out to gain better access

Now you've mentioned ball bearings, I'm sure that he eased them out (having removed the epoxy) with a small screwdriver, exposing allen bolt heads

Sorry it's vague, but it was over 10 years ago

If you can get to the heads of the shear bolts (or whatever) just use a sharp chisel to tap them around, just like you would a steering lock

Hi, can you please PM me with an email or contact number, as this extra info you mentioned about the prototype work is very interesting for me . I am dealing with similar problems relating to this same chap and there seem to be many other people in the same boat as us.
