Definitely sounds as if the master cylinder seals have gone (or flipped) Possibly a rebuild kit required or a complete cylinder (not as £horrific as it sounds)

They are all interchangeable between Mk3, Mk4 and Mk5 as far as I am aware. If you can stick a picture up so I can see which one you have I have a few new ones for Mk3's (there were 2 or 3 different types)
