Electronic / Mechanical Speedometer

Postby toppetsaha » Sat Jan 17, 2015 7:54 pm

Ive been checking the van over & noticed that the speedo coming from the gearbox is electrical, however the inlet on the back of the instrument cluster is for a mechanical cable... Funny how the bloke i bought the van off told me it snapped a while ago.

Im guessing that the gearbox had been changed in the past.

Just wondering if there is any conversion for this? or maybe somebody knows which year van has the electrical instrument cluster & will all of the other connections/plugs will be the same fit as the one that i have currently?

The van is a mk5 1997 2.5Di chassis cab.

1997 was the changeover year I believe :?

I'm not sure if you can fit the electronic head and make it work, but you can swap the gearbox drive and fit a cable :)
Hopefully, someone can tell us whether both ways is possible

Probably a silly question but does the box have to be removed to replace that? :?

Alternative may be to fit an aftermarket speedometer, dont really want to do that though...

I've not done it myself, but I'm pretty sure that it's a straight swap out 8)

Done a bit of research & it looks like the mech/electric speedo drive units can be swapped over, just got to find one now...

you will need

the mechanical drive pinion (about £15 from ford, and will be the right one for you van)
the cap that goes over it (but you could probably leave the electronic sender in place)
The oil seal (same as a type 9 one)
2 M6 bolts
The cable retaining fork.

If you go to ford, the bits will be about £50, or £5-10 from the scrappy.

You may also need to knock a blank out to allow the pinion to poke through the side of the gearbox and seal to fit. Fitting shouldn't take more than a few minutes. It would also be a good idea to get some MT75 oil (1.25L) and change it while your there (some will leak out, so you will need to top it up anyway)
