the front door speakers are 6"x4" but with a little work you can get 6"x9" speakers to fit,
If you have speakers in your doors there shouldn't be any speakers behind the kick panels just a bracket to hold the plugs for the door wiring.

The door speakers are 6/8 most of the makers do replacements, take a look at these on ebay.

Also madvanman, it was always an option on weather you have the speakers in the footwell, mine has the factory fitted amp and a mid and tweater in each footwell as well as the subs in the doors.

The factory fitted amp is just to the left of the glove box, if you pull out the sunk in bit in the top of the dashboard you will see it on the left down the side.

halfords sell adapter plates ,remove the factory fitted speaker fit the adapter plate and then you can fit speaker of your choice ie. doesnt have to be same shape.just fitted them in my van. they are made from plastic so you can drll holes according to your speaker size. they are sold as mondeo front door adapter plates, cost about a tenner

One of these.

Only trouble is you can only fit a 165mm speaker in to them. Had them in my escort and the door panel used to rub on the speaker, so it does also depend on what speaker you put in them.
