It's a thing that naturally happens over time.

The oil breather pipe from the rocker cover/filler cap vents any gas/oil vapor back into the intake
manifold.Depending on how "heavy" your engine is breathing it may take weeks, months or longer for
the oil vapor to build up a noticeable anount of oil in the pipe.

You can either,
Clean the pipe regularly.
Fit an oil catch tank.
Remove the breather pipe and blank it at the mainfold end then fit a small K&N type filter to the outlet on the
filler cap allowing the gas/vapor to vent to atmosphere

I'm assuming the engine is running normally and is regularly given a service.

If there's a lot of oil then its probably the bolt that that fastens down through the top of the front rocker pedestal to prevent the rocker shaft from sliding out (its a common problem easily sorted) it gets loose and oil (more than normal) gets blown up the filler neck and into the manifold where it then runs back down past the EGR butterfly and into the airfilter box :( remove the rocker cover and tighten the bolt  if you take the oil filler cap off with the engine running you'll notice the amount of oil that gets blown out (if its anything more than a really fine mist then check the above)

I've just cleaned out the top of mine with this problem. Given that it's not got the MOT yet, I haven't run it long enough to see if it has cured the problem but I suspect that it was clogged up oil galleries causing excess pressure under the rocker cover. Can't remember if there was a trick to getting the inlet manifold off of the head since I just split the bananas and cleaned the air filter section and left the cylinder head side attached.
It does seem to run better though.
If I knew then what I know now, I'd have taken it to the scrapyard...

Glad I didn't though :)
