Thinking about blanking the EGR Valve..

Postby VanPlan » Sat Jan 23, 2016 10:08 pm

Im tempted to blank the EGR valve I know its been mentioned before but I want to know how are pleople getting on after a few months of doing it.

Also what are the main pros and cons of blanking?

Help will be appreciated as its something I can tackle myself.

Thanks

Mine is disabled by means of holding open the throttle butterfly, and it's been fine for over 5 years. The slight disadvantage is that induction roar is slightly louder :P

It's one of the first jobs I do when aquiring a Di if it hasn't already been done.

As you can see this 1 hadn't been blanked and lot's of lovely black *EGR* cloggage was living in the manifold.

Take 1 egr gasket and a piece of stainless.Think this is 304.
Stainless is good as you can use a thinish piece without the exhaust nasties eating through it.

WP_20160124_001.jpg

Place gasket as a template.

WP_20160124_002.jpg

Use a marker to get the outline.

WP_20160124_003.jpg

This is now ready to be trimmed and drilled.

WP_20160124_004.jpg

The benifit is that all the nasty stuff goes out the exhaust and not into the engine.
Never had an emissions fail on an MOT with 1 fitted.

Also I removed the butterfly.2x small torx bolts hold it in place.

me too
only downside is it appears to take slightly longer to start on a cold morning
however theres a big hill by me and it can now go up there in 4th on a cold engine so i think its a win win even if the tie clip looks heathy robinson :D

You could always remove the butterfly itself so you can lose the whole linkage.

What exactly have you done?
Have you fitted a blanking plate and/or tied the butterfly flap open ?

Trimming next....

Angle grinder/thin slitting disc and flap wheel.

Roughly cut out.

WP_20160225_009.jpg

Debur and neaten up with the flap wheel in the grinder.

One finished blank plate.

Strong enough to outlast the van and thin enough not to stick out like a sore thumb

Or you can buy a pre made plate from eBay for a few quid... :-)

On the note about taking slightly longer to start, that is not the case with mine - pretty much starts before I have finished turning the key. Blank has been fitted for well over a year now.

Already had the materials so it just cost my time.
If I hadn't have been doing that the wife would have had me putting shelves up or other household bloke stuff

Didn't have to wait for it to come in the post either :D

Where and how to fit said plate. (Iv'e already got one in so I didn't pull it apart this time)

EGR removal.

WP_20160224_007.jpg

Remove the 2 T40 torx bolts housing the Egr to the throttle body. One arrow is blue to show there's another bolt out of shot.
Undo the clamp at the base of the Egr either with a flat blade screwdriver of 8mm socket.
Bottom arrows indicate bolts to be loosened if your'e taking the manifold off as well to clean it (highly recomend the cleaning)
One bottom arrow is yellow (The bolt sheared so I didn't bother trying to get the other 1 out)
It's better if you can get them loose but not the end of the world if you can't.

Close up of 1 of the T40 bolts.
WP_20160224_001.jpg

Once the Egr is off you can decide wether or not you want to remove the butterfly from the housing or just tie it open with a tiewrap.
If your just blanking it and using a tie wrap then just slip the plate between the Egr and manifold and replace the torx bolts and nip them up.
Here's 1 I made earlier. This blank has been in 2 vans and covered MANY miles.
WP_20160224_003.jpg

If you want to go the whole way.Throttle body and butterfly removal then these need to be loosened.
2x 10mm bolts. Also the hose clip and pipe comming from the air box.
Butterfly is held in by 2x T15 (T15 is the only small torx bit in my set covered in Egr shite so I must have used it to remove the screws)

If you want to go further and remove the nannas the yellow arrow indicates the 17mm bolt on the support bracket that needs to come out.
Remember the sheared bolt earlier? It's ok as the bracket will bend enough to get the manifold off without un doing the 2 or in my case 1 remaining bottom bolt.

WP_20160225_004.jpg

And it's mate.
WP_20160225_005.jpg

Small yellow arrow indicates WTF.Looks fubar but checked with a mirror and it's clean.
The camera does indeed lie.

Once off You can try to locate the torx screws in all the Egr soot (rubber gloves are highly recomended from this point if you haven't been wearing them)
See pics in my earlier post showing throttle body and manifold.

Due to 5 pic thing.

To be continued..........
