The last couple of days I have mostly been attacking what was originally the front spring hangers with the angle grinder, I had previously done a patch up job to the nearside one a couple of years ago but lately the offside was looking the same, so I thought it was time to do both sides properly.

As expected the chassis was crusty underneath both so any rot was cut out and they will both need new sections welding back in. I got the new spring hangers from central panels but I won't get chance to do anymore until the middle of next week now though.

This is what I've got to show for my efforts!

Cheers Paul, I've got new bottom ball joint, anti roll bar bushes and drop links and the rubber bushes in wishbone etc to fit too, I might as well do them all whilst it's apart. :D

Fitted new bottom ball joints and bushes to the wishbones and the boxy bits that sit above them and new anti roll bar drop links and bushes, all went well except the little bushes that go in the wishbones for the anti roll bar drop links were a fecker to fit, me and my mate tried all sorts for an hour or so and in the end we cut and rolled a piece of 1mm steel up around the the bush and squeezed it up with a couple of jubilee clips then pressed it out of the steel sleeve and into the wishbone with a large cramp and couple of sockets.

Just need to give everything a wire brush, rub down and a lick of paint before they go back on, hoping to get on with the chassis and spring hangers on wednesday.

BTW What are those boxy bits (bottom pic) called with the fat round bush in that the front part of the wishbone bolts to and other end bolts to the chassis and also the anti roll bar bolts to it?

yup 91 J reg twin wheeler mate, the plan was to have them all finished and painted today but with a seized R clip in the anti roll bar, and rounding bolt in the bottom ball joint and the trouble with those feckin pesky little drop link bushes in the wishbones, it meant it was dark and I couldn't be arsed any further

Had to work in my cramped garage today as it was raining all day, but managed to get all the bits cleaned up a bit and painted, not very good pics as I'm crap with a camera, and it was inside with a flash and a tired old camera, they came out ok but still need a touch up here and there where I kept bumping into them as I didn't have a lot of space!

Well it was bloody cold but the sun was out and we managed to get the holes in both sides of the chassis and front panel repaired, the chassis section doesn't normally extend right to the front panel but ends before it, decided it would be stronger and be better against muck ingress to extend it right up to the front panel, left a few small gaps at the front and back to allow some waxoyl to be put in at the end then will cover them over after.
Cold and tired.... I'm feeling my 59 yrs! but still had a good half an hour before light faded so I tried the spring hangers for fit and they were really good, just needs about half to 1mm off the front edge to line up perfectly, so I made a start on grinding the welds down.

Yeah I cheated and got a bloke called Scott who does classic car repairs to weld these chassis sections, I can do it but it would take me several days and not be as neat and I wanted it good and solid as the suspension hangs off it, and Scott is younger and works quicker. I was the man with the grinder doing the cutting and prep and I don't mind welding the spring hangers to nice new metal and the finishing off bits around it now its basically solid. I'm going to get the welds ground back later and then hopefully get on with welding in the hangers....weather permitting!

Had to use my phone as a speedo.

The one one the van started acting like a rev counter and then packed in.

Need to diagnose the problem over the weekend.
Could be wiring. Could be cluster .

Took it for an MoT - it passed!

Only prepping this year was checking the lights and horn, had to replace bulbs in a number plate light and running light in driver's door pillar, both 5W capless.

Advisories for 3 tyres close to limit, strut tops corroding, and sills.
