Yes you can make it work. I was able to read my mk5 1998 epic transit. You will need a modified cable for ford, like the one below:

Good evening,

I have been searching for the right tool to read the OBD of my 1996 Ford Transit Nugget 2.5L Turbodiesel. I have tried 7 different tools already. All with different software.
Because of this topic I took the chance to order a modified ELM327 online -> https://www.autowolf.nl/nl/obd2/329-elm327-ford-obd2-usb-pc-interface-met-schakelaar.html

It arrived today and it immediately found my Transit. I used FORscan software, downloadable here -> https://forscan.org/download.html

I hope other people who have the same issues of not being able to read the OBD are helped with this.

And many thanks for the people beforehand who discussed this.

Wkr,
Bob

Thank you for your answers. My Transit left the factory in August 1994, it is one of the very first 2015 model years. According to other exchanges it would be equipped with an OBD1 price in OBD2 hardware format. For this reason the current ELM327 modules that I have tried do not seem to be suitable. I will keep the community informed of the rest ... remy16

I bought an FoCom (now company is called FCom) some time ago and was able to read codes and delete them for my 1998 Transit 2.5TDi and their scanner covers many Ford vehicles.
Check with them whether their scanner will work on 1994-1995 models.

Hello and thank you j6393
I just contacted them; They tell me that there is no diagnostic tool for Fords prior to 1996 ...
However, these vehicles use components that require electronics, with an ECU computer, sensors and potentiometers ...

Late 1994 - 2000 transits use the same software

It confuses me slightly, but how can it read a 1996 but not a 1994 when they use the same ECU, same wiring harness, same injection pump etc? There was an immobiliser change in 1995 but not an engine management one.

There was a minor ECU update in 1997, with a small change to the connector so you can't fit a late ecu in a early van and vice versa - but if you modify to get around that the diagnostics still work?

I have a 1998 ECU, built in to a 1994 ECU case in a 1996 van, which was sold as a '97 model year, I have had to move one wire in the ECU plug (for the calibration resistor) but other than that all works perfectly.

Hi guys
I am really sorry, i had not seen your posts.
So what i did is that i tried something like 5-6 devices (thanks ebay /paypal for the return free guarantee if device not working).
I tried some expensive who not worked and the last, a no-name ELM327 WIFI OBD2 worked fine with forscan android software.

The Explication was technical: the other devices was not really ELM327 version 1.XX (? dont remember the version) or they was not compatible with forscan.

I had put all technical details on a french forum https://www.ford-transit-forum.com/t12414-mk4-mk5-le-systeme-lucas-e-p-i-c. Look at the end of page 1 and after!

Conclusion: our Transits since at least 1995 are fully OBD2/ELM327 compatible. But you must find the device who is full working with forscan.

Now my device who was working with forscan 2016 is no more working with the new version of forscan 2022, but is maibe a setting i dont have yet seen.

...It was a wrong setting on my phone: the VPN i have had blocked the WIFI connection betwen ForScan and OBD. I must uninstal the VPN and all was ok, ForScan (last version) connect to my Transit.
Very important Note: my ELM is a 1.5 version !
