Load balancing valve

Postby linsey_young » Sat Nov 19, 2016 3:15 pm

My welder has asked me to take the load balancing valve off to give him room to work on my chassis rails. It's crusty as a loaf of good bread, and probably not worth putting back on. Is it strictly speaking necessary, or can I just bypass it? The Ford dealership quoted me £960 for a new one!
If I knew then what I know now, I'd have taken it to the scrapyard...

Glad I didn't though :)

Is it a requirement that it has it? I'm going to spray it all with plusgas and leave it a day or two. Hopefully it'll come off in one piece...

I think you'll find it would be unsafe, nigh on deadly, with nothing to reduce and compensate rear brake pressure..

I bypassed the valve on my old mk3 escort van temporarily as it was leaking,
Slightest touch of the brakes and it would lock up and 'swap ends' :o

There was a recent thread here where the possibility came up of replacing it with a fixed pressure reducing valve ... or one that's adjustable, just not automatically self-adjusting.

As you point out, the system expects some sort of pressure reduction in there and without it, it would just lock the brakes :D

And you could always contact any breakers in your area, or http://www.transitcenter.uk/brake-power-regulator-ford-transit-1991-2000-p-2662.html.

Step back. Is your valve seized or does it still move? If still moving then clean off the crud, carefully releasing the pipes, which are probably due for replacement and remove it from the chassis. Get the welding done and refit it using new bolts. Plaster it in spray grease to keep rain and salt off it. Works for me.

My twin wheel mk3 camper ( ex ambulance) doesn't have a load valve. Brakes work just fine. It does however weigh 2.5 tons with a max gvw of 3.5 tons, so never fully unladen like a van could be. So maybe will depend if your van is a van or a permanently part loaded campervan.
I did take off a load senser froma 4wd Terrano - apparently it only adjusts the brake pressure on these by about 10-15% - and I can tell no difference in braking. I guess it will depend what difference in relative pressure the Transit valve gives - it might be a lot more.

Mine is 2105 kg when full of stuff. Not including passenger or driver.

Its GVW is 2440 kg (60kg under the LEZ limit. Handy :) )

Mk5 short wheelbase. Not that big, really. Although two of me mates, one has a Bongo and the other has a VW campervan. They were amazed at how big my van was inside. One of them, he's 6 foot 4 and he could actually stand up in it. Just ;)

was gonna do a my LAV hell part2...

fitted fixed valve after agreement with insurance as its camper...drives better than ever, really fine adjustment on Wilwood valve

However van safer than ever and still no MOT...they can't deal with it ffs

so after quote of nearly £700 for recon from Germany and they refuse to sell kit  I have mine apart, traced it as a Lockheed part, Northwest classic looking for seals.

If you remove, undo at pivot leaving long spring fixed to axle or you're in for hgv style setup fun

I will post a how to rebuild if I get sorted :|

(Mine is late mk3 variant...fair amout of mk2 and mk5 on ebay btw)

Are they at you under 3.6 E 2?
Method of Inspection: "Check that a load sensing valve is present and connected, if it is a standard item."
Reason for Rejection: "Evidence that a load sensing valve has been removed or disconnected from a vehicle where it is known to have been fitted as standard."

:(
