Wheel bearings / front brakes

Postby Dawsie » Sat Sep 24, 2005 9:56 am

I have a problem with my bearings/ stub axle / callipers.

Over the years i have had the wheels off more times than i can think and have even found a new/sh stub axle for the o/s but seem to get the same problem. and now the splines have ground away.

right now , despite the fact that the splines are ground down the bearing spins and drives ok on both sides but i hate the fact that it doesn't spin nicely and has no splines . The problem i have also has changed / manifested itself since fitting new disks and pads in that i now have a squeek because the disk seems to warp , presumably because i drifted the old disk off with a very big hammer and damaged the hub . i replaced the other side and wasted a new ish disk and ground off the burr which impinged to give the warp and will probably do the same on the drivers side . Can any one supply me with 2 stub axles/hubs/disks ......er knowledge ?
Typically i always end up doing such jobs badly /wrong because at midnight in the dark under the tranny is not a nice place to be .

The disks fit into the calliper with a 'cock hair' as clearance and it states in the haynes that there are two widths of vented disk .
The words of one of the last mechanic to touch it now ring in my ear ...... he said it was a mix of various machines ..... / Come to mention it when i bought it at auction i tried to get a part from Ford and the No's claimed it was a red sierra - we phoned experian and it proved to be a transit after all .

as a tumble weed rolls by....................

Thanks James

You won't have warped the hub or the disk no matter how hard you drifted it off, but you've probably warped the disk due to heavy breaking. Which splines are you talking about?

John , my van is the tipper as pictured . its a 94 L reg , not the smilie , the hub pretrudes with studs and nuts rather than bolts .

Answer to MrMPuk . The splines that i refer to are the splines that are ground into the stub axle . A washer with splines sits over the axle , the reverse thread nut then sits and then the castleated cover with split pin.

contd....

When i spin the hub round when the van is jacked up the squeek is most evident . it appears to be because the disk is warped slightly and it rubs on the pad . when i drifted the old disks off i fitted the new ones in the dark. and didn't ground the burr from the chisel off all the way round , with in no time the squuek was evident on the o/s and i replaced the disk and ground off the burr . it worked alrite ....now suddenly the d/s is doing it ...... as you say my disk is warped .........so i will get another one ............as the splines are ground away i would like 2 stub axles to do the job completely. i.e new bearings to boot.

I still can't picture the splines you mean, what do they do?
